EAST LANSING, Mich. – In a classic pitcher's duel, Michigan State softball fell to Washington in the first-ever B1G meeting between the two sides on Friday afternoon, 3-1. The two pitching staffs combined to allow just four runs on seven total hits in the contest.
MSU moves to 13-24 (3-11 B1G) while Washington improves to 30-12 (8-5). The Spartans return to Secchia Stadium on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. for game two of the series.
Freshman Carsyn Cassady (3-2) struck out four through three innings of work before being relieved by sophomore Ava Mullen in the fourth frame. It was a career-long performance by Mullen who went 4.0 innings out of the bullpen allowing just three hits, no runs and striking out one.
Junior Hannah Hawley provided the pop once again with a fourth inning homer. Sophomore Hannah Greer singled in the seventh inning and junior Kaelin Cash drew a walk for MSU.
Defensively Hawley and sophomore shortstop Payton Conroy combined to catch three Huskies baserunners on stolen base attempts.
Washington struck first taking an early 2-0 lead in the opening stanza on a pair of two-out RBI base knocks. The Huskies tacked on an additional run in the fourth after consecutive shutout innings by Cassady in the second and third.
Hawley tallied MSU's first hit and only run of the afternoon in the fourth inning with a lead-off home run to right center field. Hawley's homer was her 11th of the season and the 23rd of her career, moving her into a tie for eighth in program history alongside teammate junior Britain Beshears.
