What you need to know about Spartan softballÂ
•  Michigan State begins a six-game homestand three Big Ten games against Maryland.  All three games will be played at Secchia Stadium.  Spartan softball is welcoming back its alumni this weekend, and in particular celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 AIAW National Champions.  The '76 team will be on the field to throw out the first pitch on Saturday.•  MSU split a pair of midweek games, with a dramatic come-from-behind win over Western Michigan on Tuesday (9-8) and falling on Wednesday at Notre Dame. The Spartans played their final Big Ten road series last weekend at Northwestern, dropping all three contests. Â
•  MSU has drawn 160 walks in 45 games this season, (3.62 per game), which is eighth in the Big Ten.  The 160 walks is eighth all-time for walks in a season in the MSU record books. Â
• The Spartans have smacked 60 doubles through 45 games (the 2022 team also hit 60), which is the most for a Spartan team since 2019, when MSU hit 65 - which ranks in a tie for 10th most in a single season all-time. Â
•  MSU has turned 18 double plays this season, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten (0.40/gm).  It is also tied for the fifth-most DPs in a season in program history (1984, 1994).  It is the most since the 2019 team had 19, and the school record is 27 in 2015.  Â
• Kendall Smiley led the Spartans with a 6-for-10 performance at the plate in the five games over the last week and also drew a pair of walks.  She is second on the team with 37 base hits and third with a .262 batting average, and has added 17 RBI, which is fifth.  Smiley has already surpassed her 2025 total in base hits (33) and within striking distance of bettering her 18 RBI a year ago.
•  Hannah Hawley went 4-for-7 in the Northwestern series with a double and two RBI.  She has started all 45 games, is fourth in batting average (.254), is second in RBI (21), third in walks (22) and doubles (7), and on-base percentage (.396). She has reached base in 10 straight games, the team's longest active streak as well as her season high. Â
• Home runs were the story of the midweek tilts - against Western Michigan, Britain Beshears hit a pair and Sydney Doloszycki hit a three-run bomb that stood as the difference in a 9-8 win.  On Wednesday, Sophia Grillo hit her fifth of the season.  MSU has now hit 25 homers this season. Â
•  Beshears hit her 28th and 29th career home runs on Tuesday, which brings her into a tie with Sarah Gutknecht (2013-17) for fourth in program history.  Hannah Hawley has four homers this year and a career total of 25, good for fifth place all-time. Â
• Doloszycki's three-run bomb on Tuesday vs. Western brought MSU all the way back from a four-run deficit and was the difference in a 9-8 victory.  The senior leads the squad with 27 RBI, is second on the team in batting average (.305), and third in hits (36) and doubles (7).  She is one of just two players in the senior class (along with classmate Beshears) to play all four of her collegiate seasons at Michigan State. Â
• Sophia Grillo delivered her fifth homer of the season on Wednesday at Notre Dame, pulling her into a tie for the team lead with Beshears (5).  Eleven of Grillo's 24 base hits have been for extra bases (six doubles, five homers). Â
