Spartans Drop Series Opener to UM, 6-1

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State softball dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting Michigan on Friday. Michigan State had nine hits on the day, but stranded 11 runners – including two innings of leaving the bases loaded situations.
Michigan State falls to 17-32 on the year and is 3-18 in Big Ten play. Michigan is 31-19, and 9-13 in Conference action.
Michigan's runs were primarily generated from the long ball – Lauren Putz hit a pair, including a three-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the fifth. She finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.
The Spartans were led at the plate by Sydney Doloszycki who went 3-for-4; Zoie Bernard, Kendall Smiley and Hannah Greer each had two hits on the afternoon. Bernard had MSU's only extra-base hit when she led off the game with a double to left.
Erin Hoehn went the distance for the visiting Wolverines, scattering 10 hits and striking out five; she surrendered just a third-inning sac fly to Hannah Hawley to score MSU's only run. Carsyn Cassady started the game and went three innings and allowing four runs and scattering five hits. Autumn Behlke finished the contest, allowing six hits, striking out three and surrendering two runs in her four innings of work.
The teams will play game two of the series on Saturday, with a 5 pm first pitch.

NOTEWORTHY
- The Spartans turned their 20th double play of the season in the top of the first inning, which ranks fourth all-time in a single season at MSU.
- Kirsten Caravaca gunned down Jenissa Conway attempting to steal second in the top of the third, her 10th runner caught stealing this season.
- The Spartans stranded 11 runners, their most in a Big Ten game this year.
- Sydney Doloszycki went 3-for-4, her fifth game this season with three base hits.
- Zoie Bernard had a double and went 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Hannah Greer finished her day 2-for-3 with a stolen base. It is her first multiple-hit game of the season and also her first stolen base as a Spartan.
- Kendall Smiley went 2-for-4.
SCORING SUMMARIES
- Michigan's Lauren Putz hit a three-run homer in the top of the third inning, but MSU immediately countered. Zoie Bernard laid down a perfect bunt single to start things off in the bottom of the frame and moved around the bases on a ground ball out by Caravaca and a single through the left side by Sydney Doloszycki. Bernard came home on a sac fly by Hannah Hawley to make it 3-1.
- Michigan added to its lead on a solo homer by Lilly Vallimont to start the fourth inning, making it 4-1. Putz hit her second of the day in the top of the fifth; the Spartans left the bases loaded in both the home half of both the fourth and fifth innings with opportunities to trim down the Wolverine lead
- Michigan's final run came in the sixth after Putz had a one-out double and came home on a Jenissa Conway RBI single.
