What you need to know about Spartan softballÂ
•  Michigan State has its final three games of the regular season this weekend at Secchia Stadium against Michigan.  The Spartans will celebrate their four-member senior class in a Sunday pregame ceremony.    •  Michigan is coached by Bonnie Tholl; she is in her fourth season as the head coach after a 29-year tenure on the coaching staff with Spartan grad (and MSU Hall of Famer) Carol Hutchins.  Tholl has guided the Wolverines to a 30-19 record in 2026, with an 8-13 mark in Big Ten play.  Â
•  Michigan State enters the weekend after taking one game of the three-game set against visiting Maryland last weekend.  MSU won the Friday game, 4-3 in nine innings on a Hannah Hawley walkoff sac fly.  The Terps took a Saturday pitcher's duel by a 3-0 score, and earned the win in the rubber match, 7-2.  MSU enters the weekend finale at 17-31, with a 3-17 mark in Big Ten play (tied with Maryland). Â
•  MSU has drawn 177 walks in 48 contests this season, (3.69 per game), which is seventh in the Big Ten.  MSU averaged just over three walks per game last year (136 walks in 45 games).  The 177 walks is fifth all-time for walks in a season in the MSU record books. Â
•  Hannah Hawley went 3-for-7 in the Maryland series (.429), with two doubles, four walks, and two RBI.  She is third on the team in batting average (.263), walks (26) and doubles (9), and is second in RBI (23).  Over the last 10 games, Hawley is 10-for-27 (.370) with three doubles, five walks, and five RBI.
•  In MSU's five games last week, Britain Beshears went 4-of-13 with three homers and five RBI.  Four of her hits last week were home runs, pushing her career total to 30 - fourth in program history.  Hawley has four homers this year and a career total of 27, good for sixth place all-time.  Â
• Sydney Doloszycki's three-run bomb last Tuesday vs. Western brought MSU back from a four-run deficit and was the difference in a 9-8 victory.  The senior leads the squad with 27 RBI, is second on the team in batting average (.305), and third in homers (4), and slugging (.461), and fourth in doubles (8).  Â
•  Catcher Kirsten Caravaca had a pair of base hits (one double) in the Maryland series and walked three times. On the season, she is batting .290 with 12 RBI.  Behind the plate, Caravaca has started 37 games, recording 143 putouts, 13 assists, and just three errors (.981 fielding pct.). She has thrown out nine runners on stolen base attempts, which is third among B1G catchers. Â
•  MSU has just three players who have started all 48 games and just one has started every one at the same position - Kendall Smiley in right.  Over the last 10 games, Smiley is hitting .320 (8-for-25) with a pair of RBI and two walks.
•  Sophomore Natalia Kenyatta has delivered eight base hits in the last nine games (.333). She owns career highs in hits (16), walks (9), stolen bases (2) and runs (11).  Defensively, she has 27 putouts and 44 assists with just one error.
•  Jacey Schuler leads the Spartans in starts (21) and innings pitched (88.0),  She needs five innings to match the 93 she threw as a freshman, while her 29 appearances and her four complete games are career bests.  Â
•  Carsyn Cassady went 1-1 in the Maryland series, earning the win by throwing two-thirds inning of relief in Friday's victory.  She went 6.1 innings in  Saturday's  pitcher's duel, where she scattered just two base hits and struck out four in 114 pitches.  Cassady owns a 5.89 ERA in 29 appearances, surpassing her freshman season totals in innings (79.2), strikeouts (70), complete games (2), and starts (13).
