Spartans Fall at Northwestern in Series Finale

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State fell at Northwestern, 8-0, in five innings in the series finale on Sunday night at The Ball Park in Rosemont, Illinois.
Northwestern (23-19, 11-7 B1G) jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the first inning, led by Emma Raye's three-run homer.
The Spartans got their first hit of the game on Hannah Hawley's leadoff double in the top of the second and she advanced to third on a two-out single by Kendall Smiley, but the runners were left stranded on a groundout to end the scoring threat.
The Wildcats were kept off the scoreboard for the next three innings, however, they plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out the game, 8-0.
Jacey Schuler (5-13) started on the mound and took the loss for the Spartans, while Marina Mason (13-8) struck out six in the complete game shutout to earn the victory.
Michigan State (15-28, 2-15 B1G) returns to action Tuesday, April 21 to host Western Michigan at 5 p.m. in Secchia Stadium.
