BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan State field hockey dropped its final road game of the season, falling to No. 20-ranked Indiana, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon from Deborah Tobias Field.
MSU moves to 5-11 (1-6 B1G) and looks to bounce back in the final weekend of the regular season when it plays host to MAC opponent Central Michigan on Friday, October 31 and No. 2-ranked Northwestern on Sunday, November 2.
The Hoosiers out-shot Michigan State 26-1 and held a 13-1 advantage in shots on goal. Indiana owned a 9-1 edge in penalty corner opportunities.
Michigan State got a goal from sophomore Caro Schafer scored for the Spartans on Sunday, knocking in a ball via a re-direct. Schafer inserted a penalty corner to junior Bianca Pizano whose shot found Schafer's stick and went in.
Sophomore Ashley Herbet and junior Lyra Gavino split time in goal for MSU combining to make seven saves.
Things remained even at 0-0 through the first period of play, with both teams playing well on the defensive side of the ball.
Fifty-six seconds into the second period, Indiana notched their first goal of the game, but Michigan State quickly responded off the penalty corner attempt by Schafer. The Hoosiers converted on their second goal of the game moments after MSU tied the game at 1-1. Indiana attempted a penalty corner with the first shot being saved by Herbert, but a nearby Indiana attacker was there for the put back, putting Indiana back in the lead, 2-1.
Indiana led 5-1 at the halftime break and capitalized a sixth time in the fourth period.
