COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Michigan State field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision on the road Friday afternoon against Ohio State at Buckeye Varsity Field.
With the result, MSU moves to 5-11 overall and 0-8 in Big Ten action, while Ohio State improves to 5-10 (1-6 B1G).
The Buckeyes held a 14-4 advantage in total shots, a 9-1 edge in shots on goal, and earned six penalty corners to Michigan State's two.
Michigan State generated four shots on the afternoon, led by sophomore midfielder Ellie Kendall, who placed a shot on frame off an opening-quarter penalty corner. Senior back Natalie Arnold and junior midfielder Mora Cavazza each contributed a shot each. Junior goalkeeper Lola Munoz de Verger delivered a complete-game effort in cage for the Spartans, recording five saves across 60 minutes of action.
The Spartans earned their best scoring opportunities early in the opening quarter off consecutive penalty corners inserted by junior midfielder Lilian Knorr. In the fourth minute, Arnold's drive was blocked, and Kendall followed in the fifth minute with an on-target strike that was turned aside on a defensive save by the Buckeye backline to keep the game scoreless.
Ohio State opened the scoring early in the second period, striking on an unassisted finish in the 19th minute. The Spartans looked to respond quickly, generating shot attempts from Kendall and Cavazza, but the Buckeyes extended their lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute by converting off a penalty corner sequence.
Munoz de Verger anchored the Spartan defense through a heavily contested third quarter, turning aside four on-frame Buckeye attempts, including three stops during penalty corner situations. Ohio State broke through late in the frame, finding the cage on an unassisted second-chance finish in the 44th minute to push the margin to 3-0.
The Buckeyes capped the scoring in the 55th minute off a feed inside the circle to seal the 4-0 result.
