EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State field hockey concludes the 2026 season with a split weekend, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to face Big Ten foe Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 23, before returning to Ralph Young Field for a non-conference matinee against Bellarmine on Sunday, Oct. 25.
Friday's conference finale at Buckeye Varsity Field is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, while Sunday's season finale against the Knights will get underway at noon. Both contests will be streamed live on B1G+.
SERIES HISTORY
Ohio State
Friday's clash marks the 73rd all-time meeting between Michigan State and Ohio State on the turf. The Spartans trail the series 25-44-3 and are looking to secure consecutive victories over the Buckeyes for the first time since 2016-2017.
Bellarmine
On Sunday, Michigan State faces Bellarmine for just the fourth time in program history. The Spartans lead the all-time series 3-0, having captured a 2-1 victory over the Knights in their September of 2025 at Ralph Young Field.
ABOUT OHIO STATE
Ohio State enters Friday's contest with a 4-10 overall record (0-6 B1G) under 10th-year head coach Jarred Martin, looking to close out Big Ten play with momentum on home turf.
Offensively, the Buckeyes rely on dynamic junior forward Sienna Golden, who paces the attack as a potent scoring threats with a team-leading seven goals scored this season. Alongside Golden, graduate student Phillippa Jowett provides consistent finishing and penalty corner insertion, tallying four goals and three assists for the Scarlet & Gray this season.
In the cage, Ohio State has utilized a tandem approach, splitting time between junior Maddie Stevens and freshman Avery Alleva. Both netminders have logged starts and posted combined shutouts on the season, anchoring a backline that has held four opponents to fewer than 10 shots on the year. Stevens brings starting experience with a 2.31 goals-against average, while Alleva has provided steady relief and high-volume stops, sporting a 2.18 GAA and a save percentage sitting over .690.
ABOUT BELLARMINE
Bellarmine visits East Lansing guided by head coach Devanny Boisvert, competing out of the Mid-American Conference. The Knights carry a 2-12 overall record (2-5) into Sunday's contest.
The Knights look to junior midfielder Luna Tuncay and senior midfielder Brooke Buchanan to spark scoring chances in the attacking third. Tuncay leads the Knights with four goals scored this season, while Buchanan leads the team with two assists, and has tallied two goals.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper Megan Clauser anchors the cage, having recorded several high-volume save performances this fall to keep Bellarmine competitive against nationally ranked opponents. Clauser ranks second in the MAC in saves made (114) and saves per game (8.14).
LAST TIME OUT FOR MSU
MSU wrapped up its East Coast road trip last week with a pair of Big Ten setbacks, falling 4-0 at No. 1 Maryland on Friday before dropping a 4-0 decision at Rutgers in Piscataway on Sunday. Against the top-ranked Terrapins, the Spartans were held to three shots on the afternoon. In Sunday's contest against the Scarlet Knights, freshman forward Aiden Weinmann registered MSU's lone shot attempt.
BALANCED SCORING ATTACK
Michigan State has displayed a balanced offensive attack throughout the 2026 campaign, generating scoring opportunities from up and down the roster rather than relying on a single option in the circle.
Through 15 games, 10 different Spartans have found the back of the cage, with five players recording multiple tallies on the year. Junior midfielder Lilian Knorr and senior forward Bianca Pizano lead the attack with five goals apiece, followed closely by junior midfielder Mora Cavazza with four. Sophomore midfielder Ellie Kendall has added three goals, while sophomore forward Caroline Horace has chipped in two. Rounding out the scoring sheet with one goal each are senior forward Serena Mailhe, sophomore forwards Nina Angeli and Ella McKernan, and freshman forwards Clare Arvai and Aiden Weinmann.
That selflessness carries over to the distribution game, where 10 different Spartans have logged an assist this season. Junior midfielder Carmen Maudlin leads the way with five assists.
