Field Hockey Hosts #2 Northwestern, Central Michigan in Season Finale

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey returns home to Ralph Young Field for the final time this season when it squares off against No. 2-ranked Northwestern on Friday, October 31, and Central Michigan on Sunday, November 2. Both games will be streamed live on B1G+.
SERIES HISTORY
MSU trails the all-time series against Northwestern 24-47. MSU is 10-16 when hosting the Wildcats, with the last meeting occurring at Ralph Young and going the way of the Wildcats by a score of 5-0 on October 27, 2024. Northwestern has won the previous 14 matchups, with MSU's last win coming on November 4, 2010 (3-1). The Spartans defeated Northwestern three times that season winning 2-1, 3-2 and 3-1.
MSU leads the all-time series against Central Michigan, 50-15-4. The Spartans are 28-4-2 when hosting the Chippewas, with their last meeting at Ralph Young Field resulting in a 3-0 win for MSU on September 24, 2023. CMU is a regular pre-season exhibition opponent for the Spartans as well. Michigan State has won the last 16 games against Central Michigan dating back to 2008.

Northwestern strolls into the weekend ranked No. 2 nationally and holds a 15-1 record (7-0 B1G). The Wildcats are coming off a 2-0 weekend where they defeated No.13-ranked Michigan, 3-1, and defeated No.18-ranked Ohio State, 7-0. With its win over Michigan on Friday, October 24th, the Wildcats clinched the Big Ten regular season title.
Northwestern's offense is charged by juniors Ashley Sessa and Ilse Tromp. Sessa leads Northwestern in goals (14), assists (15) and points (43). Ilse is second on the team in goals (11) and points (24). Sessa and Tromp rank third and fourth respectively in the B1G in goals scored, first and second in assists, and Sessa is ranked second in points. Redshirt junior Aerin Keys is the team leader in assists with 12.
Redshirt freshman Juliana Boon enters the weekend as Northwestern's top shot stopper. Boon is 14-1 on the year, making 50 saves against 81 shots face, good for a .862 save percentage. Boon enters as the B1G leader in goals allowed against (0.51), save percentage (.862), total wins (14) and shutouts (8).
ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
Central Michigan comes to East Lansing sporting an 8-8 record (3-5 MAC). The Chippewas are coming off a 1-1 weekend, where they defeated Longwood, 5-3, and fell to VCU two days later, 6-1.
CMU's offense is led by senior forward Camryn Mallory and sophomore forward Carolena Ryon. Mallory leads the Chippawa in goals (16) and points (35) while ranking third in the MAC in goals and fourth in points. Ryon is second on the team in goals (10) and points (21). Freshman midfielder Mora Rulli leads CMU in assists with seven.
Ashley Cogger enters the weekend as CMU's top netminder. Cogger holds an 8-6 record, making 132 saves against 254 shots, good for a .786 save percentage. Cogger ranks second in the MAC in saves (132) and saves per game (8.25).
LAST TIME OUT FOR MSU
MSU dropped two games last week falling to No. 10-ranked Iowa, 6-0, and to No. 20 ranked-Indiana, 6-1. Against Iowa, MSU was led by Carmen Maudlin and Gracie Burns, who combined for four shots and one shot on goal. Against Indiana, sophomore Caro Schafer tallied her fourth goal of the season. Ashley Herbert and Lyra Gavino combined for seven saves on Sunday.
