East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey fell to No. 2-ranked Northwestern on Friday afternoon, 5-0, from Ralph Young Field.
MSU moves to 5-12 (1-7 B1G) and looks to finish the season on a high note when Central Michigan comes to town for a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday, November 2. Sunday's contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
The Wildcats out-shot Michigan State 23-2 and held a 15-1 edge in shots on goal. Northwestern owned a 15-1 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Junior goalkeeper Lyra Gavino was the shot stopper for MSU tallying 10 saves. On offense, junior Bianca Pizano tallied the lone shot on goal for the Spartans.
Things remained neutral through the first quarter of play with neither team breaking through for a goal. Northwestern entered halftime with a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the second, one of which came off a penalty corner opportunity. The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the third, converting on a re-direct in front of the net. NU extended its advantage to 4-0 in the fourth.
Fifty seconds after Northwestern's fourth goal, MSU freshman Caroline Horace registered a shot that was blocked out of bounds by a Wildcat defender, giving the Spartans their first penalty corner attempt of the afternoon. Off the penalty corner, sophomore Caro Schafer inserted the ball to Pizano, who rifled a shot on target that was blocked out of the air by the Northwestern goalkeeper. The Wildcats converted for their fifth goal of the afternoon on a penalty stroke later in the fourth.
