East Lansing, Mich. – No. 12/13 Michigan State took the first game in the four-game season series against archrival Michigan, scoring a 2-1 victory over the No. 6/7 ranked Wolverines on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.
Michigan State matches its win total from the 2021-22 season as it improves to 12-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in Big Ten play. Wolverines are now 11-7-1, 3-6-0 in Conference play.
Michigan opened the scoring midway through the first period, but the Spartans tied it up before the end of the period on a goal by Cole Krygier. Freshman Tiernan Shoudy made his first mark on the rivalry with what would stand as the game-winner in the second period.
The Spartans smothered the Wolverine offense in the third period – MSU allowed Michigan just five shots on goal in the final period and 23 overall in the game. The Spartans had 31 shots, with Erik Portillo turning away 29.
TJ Hughes had the lone goal for Michigan, his eighth of the season.
The teams get right back into action tomorrow with the rematch at Yost. Gametime is 6:30 pm.
STATISTICS OF NOTE
First Period: The two teams came out with bundles of energy and skated a high-tempo opening period, with both teams causing the opposing goalies to scramble and come up with big saves. The Wolverines were the first to find the scoreboard, as TJ Hughes pounced on a loose puck in the right circle and winged it toward the net. The puck found some light and past St Cyr at 13:29. The Spartans countered with the equalizer at 17:04, when Daniel Russel poked a puck along the wall deep below the goal line for Karsen Dorwart. Dorwart brought it back up the wall for Cole Krygier, who threw it at the net and it found its way past Portillo to knot the game at 1-1. MSU held a 13-8 edge in shots in the period, and won 10 of 13 faceoffs.
Second Period: The Spartans took their first lead of the game at 7:46 of the second. MSU had a flurry in front of the UM netminder Portillo, who made the initial save on Michael Underwood. Tanner Kelly had a swipe at it as the teams battled for puck possession in front of the empty cage, and Shoudy skated across the hash marks to get from the left to the right post and poked home his fifth goal of the season. The teams were even with 10 shots on net each in the frame.
Third Period: Michigan State's team defense was exceptional in the third period, shutting down lanes and most all the Wolverine attempts from the outside, allowing St. Cyr to see the puck and make all five saves that made their way to him. Michigan's five shots in the third was the fewest for any opponent since Bowling Green in the second game of the season. UM pulled Portillo in an attempt to gain the tying goal in the final three minutes, but had to keep returning the goalie to his crease as the Spartans gave their rivals zero room to thrive and generate offense. St. Cyr came up with a couple big stops in the frame.
