EAST LANSING, Mich. – Five Michigan State hockey student-athletes have received invitations to participate with USA Hockey at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase, set for July 26 – August 1 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario.
Sophomore defenseman Sean Barnhill, freshman forward Jack Hextall, junior forward Cullen Potter, freshman defenseman Chase Reid and freshman forward Mason West were among the 47 total players invited. They'll join Head Coach Adam Nightingale, who is serving as head coach of the U.S. National Junior Team in 2027, and Associate Head Coach Jared DeMichiel, who was named an assistant coach on Nightingale's staff.
Reid is the lone invitee with previous World Junior Championships experience, tallying four points (2g-2a) in five games for Team USA at the 2026 World Junior Championships in Minneapolis.
Including teams from Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States, the World Junior Summer Showcase serves as an evaluation period for athletes seeking to make their respective national junior teams for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship, held December 26 through January 5, in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta. Several other international Spartans are expected to receive invites from their home countries.
The week-long World Junior Summer Showcase includes 10 international games. The 47 U.S. players will first be split into two teams: Team Blue and Team White, with each team playing games on July 26 and 27. Beginning on July 29 against Sweden, a consolidated Team USA roster will play the remaining three contests of the event. For the full U.S. game schedule, click here.
