Spartan Tennis Splits With Penn State and Wright State on Saturday

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's tennis split with its opponents on Saturday, March 16, falling to No. 42-ranked Penn State by a score of 7-0 in the afternoon match and defeating Wright State by a final tally of 5-2 in the nightcap.
MSU's record moves to 6-11 on the season while Penn State is now 8-5 and Wright State falls to 7-11 overall. The Spartans are now 0-2 in Big Ten action and will resume conference play next week against Ohio State on Friday, March 22.
Michigan State fell to Penn State in the early portion of the doubleheader, 7-0. In doubles play, the sophomore duo of Jack Winkler and John Carlin led the No. 4 doubles pairing in the nation, Constant De la Bassetiere and Gabriel Nemeth, by a 4-2 score before their match went unfinished.
In singles, Winkler was defeated (6-2, 6-4) by the No. 101-ranked player in De la Bassetiere to end his streak of two-straight victories over ranked opponents. Freshman Carson Gates took his match at No. 5 singles to three sets, but fell to Jordan Nickerson by a 3-6, 6-0, 2-6 tally.
The Spartans took one doubles match against Wright State as senior Colin Harvey and freshman Nick Williams combined to defeat Leighton Brandon and Fernando Nardelli, 6-4. MSU was defeated in close matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles losing 7-5 and 7-6 respectively.
Williams was the first Spartan to pick up a singles victory against the Raiders, defeating Leighton Brandon at No. 4 singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score. Senior Billy Shisler came through at No. 6 to best his opponent Theo Bourghelle, 6-2, 6-0.
Carlin and Gates secured the dual match at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, each winning in two sets by scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1 respectively.
Winkler was forced to retire from his match due to injury at No. 1 singles. His opponent, Param Pun took set one 6-4, but the second set was tied 3-3 when the match was called off.
At No. 2 singles, senior Ivan Rakic closed out the night with tiebreakers in the third set, coming out ahead 10-8, following 6-4 scores in the first and second sets.
