Michigan State concludes weekend appearance in the ITA Midwest Regionals championships in Columbus, Ohio.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's tennis finished a trip to Columbus, Ohio, for the ITA Midwest Regionals championships, which featured six Spartans.
In singles play, all six Spartans gave competitive performances.
Graduate senior Esunge Ndumbe began his weekend with wins over Jacob Golden (Northwestern) 6-4, 6-1, and Lenn Stueckrath (Youngstown State) 6-4, 7-5. Ndumbe would later have an injury withdrawl from singles play.
Fellow graduate senior Thomas Nelson fell in his lone singles match to Phopthum Sriwong (Youngstown State) 4-6, 6-3, 6-7, (5-7).
Sophomore Noa Tcherniack picked up two impressive victories over Even Solheim (Marquette) 6-0, 6-0, and Nikola Puntaric (Illinois-Chicago) 6-3, 0-6, 6-1, before falling to Victor Lilov (Ohio State) 6-4, 0-6, 2-6.
Senior Lincoln Battle fought hard in a loss to Kyran Magimay (Notre Dame) 2-6, 6-7, (2-7).
Senior Taym Alazmeh split in his singles matches with a win over Tobias Leitner (DePaul) 6-2, 6-3, and a loss against Alexander Suhanitski (Notre Dame) 2-6, 4-6.
Junior Danial Rakhmatullayev began his weekend with solid victories over Clayton Anderson (Marquette) 6-2, 6-2, and Chase Thompson (Notre Dame) 6-3, 6-1. Ultimately, his run came to an end in the Round of 16 against Preston Stearns (Ohio State) 4-6, 2-6.
In doubles play, all three Spartan pairings made the Round of 16.
Tcherniack and Battle began doubles play with victories over Chen Hui Ho/Jack Davison (Western Michigan) 8-7 (8-6), and Jonas Kucera/Nicholas Patrick (Notre Dame) 8-7 (9-7), before falling short to Denis Petak/Matthew Forbes (Ohio State), 2-8.
Ndumbe and Nelson battled in a win to Patrik Meszaros/Ferdinand Kloesters (Wisconsin) 8-6, but lost to Victor Lilov/Ilija Palavestra (Ohio State), 5-8.
Alazmeh and Rakhmatullayev started with a win against Nicolas Wild/Max Henson (Cleveland State), 8-6, and competed in a tough loss to Nicholas Heng/Fredrik Krogh Solheim (Michigan), 4-8.
The Green & White will shift their focus now to the Louisville Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 23-25.
