Michigan State is 25-38-3 against Ohio State all-time, but have won each of their last two meets with the Buckeyes. In 2017, the Spartans won in a shoot-out thriller after defeating the Buckeyes 4-2 in 2016. MSU is 15-6-1 against Miami (Ohio) in their all-time series, having won their 2017 meeting by a final of 3-2.
Last Time Out
Playing in their final home game of the season on Friday, October 12, the Michigan State field hockey team fell to in-state rival Michigan by a final score of 1-0 at Ralph Young Field.
The Spartans were out-shot 16-2 overall and 8-0 in shots on goal. Michigan State played well defensively, making saves on seven of the Wolverines' eight shots on goal, including seven for freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell and a defensive save for senior Amanda Robinson.
For the fourth time in their last four conference contests, the Spartans held their opponent scoreless through the first half of action. MSU played a complete defensively, save for the lone Michigan goal.
With the score knotted up at 0-all, Michigan finally broke through the scoring barrier in the 57th minute. Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort's shot ricocheted off a Spartan defender and past Arundell. The goal was reviewed by the officials, but confirmed shortly thereafter.
Scouting the Spartans
Isa van der Weij leads the team with 10 points on the year (4g - 2a). Aisha Osinga has two goals and two assists. Madison O'Neill is third on the team in points with four on one goal and two assists. Kelsey Keener and Bailey Higgins each have three points following Higgins' first career goal last week.
Maddie McDonough, Amanda Robinson, Makenzie Brown, and Daphne Voorman each have one goal. Lia Sinisi, Maggie Cole and Cara Bonshak each have an assist.
Robinson is tied for the Big Ten lead in defensive saves with three.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell has made 16 starts in goal for MSU with a .674 save percentage and 2.65 goals against average. Arundell's 5.63 saves per game ranks No. 21 in the country and No. 1 in the Big Ten.
Scouting the Buckeyes
At 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the Big Ten, the Buckeyes come in ranked No. 22 in the latest NFHCA poll. Ohio State is currently riding a four-game winning streak following shutouts of James Madison and Kent State last week.
Ohio State is led in scoring by Esther Clotet with 20 points on eight goals and four assists. Sammy Stone is next in line with 17 points on six goals and five assists. Hannah Pany leads the team with six assists.
Goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez is the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Hernandez is tied for No. 15 in the NCAA with a win-loss percentage of .714 and is ranked No. 12 with a 1.27 goals against average.
As a team, Ohio State is No. 15 in the nation with a goals against average of 1.38.
In his second year in charge, head coach Jarred Martin owns a 20-15 career record.

Miami (Ohio) is currently 10-6, but will face conference opponent Appalachian State prior to meeting the Spartans. The Red Hawks are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 10 Louisville last week.
Paula Portugal leads the team in scoring with 35 points on 16 goals and three assists. Portugal ranks No. 5 in the country in goals per game at 1.00 and No. 9 in points per game with 2.19. Kirsten McNeil and Estel Roig are tied for the team-high in assists with six.
Goalkeeper Maddie Passarella has allowed 1.20 goals per game with a .678 save percentage in 16 starts. Passarella's goals against average ranks No. 10 in the country.
As a team, the Red Hawks rank No. 6 in shutouts per game with .44, No. 12 in penalty corners per game with 7.38 and No. 19 in points per game with 8.13.
