
Spartans Drubbed by Buckeyes in Big Ten Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In their Big Ten regular season finale on Friday, October 19, the Michigan State field hockey team fell to Ohio State by a final score of 6-1 at Buckeye Varsity Field.
Following a loss, the Spartans' record fell to 4-13 overall, while Ohio State improved to 11-6 on the season and 4-3 in the Big Ten.
Michigan State was out-shot 21-9 overall and 13-2 in shots on goal. Both team had opportunities on the penalty corner however, with Ohio State holding a slim 9-7 advantage.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell made seven saves on 21 total shots faced, while Buckeye goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez made one save.
Ohio State broke the 0-0 tie with a goal by Jessica Hourihane in the 10th minute. Hourihne dribbled around Arundell for her fourth goal of the season. The Buckeyes added two more goals before the buzzer sounded in the first half, first by Sammy Stone in the 24th minute and later by Esther Clotet in the 30th off a penalty corner. Stone later opened the second half with her second goal of the contest to give OSU a 4-0 lead.
Junior Makenzie Brown tallied the Spartans first shot on goal of the contest in the 26th minute, part of back-to-back penalty corner attempts for MSU, but it was saved by Hernandez. Freshman Isa van der Weij had her shot blocked on the ensuing corner attempt.
Sophomore Meredith Ross scored the Spartans first goal of the afternoon in the 55th minute off a feed from van der Weij. The goal was Ross' first of the season and second of her career. van der Weij's assist was her third of the season as she increased her season point total to a team-high 11 with four goals and three assists.
Ohio State scored twice more in the 59th and 65th minutes to earn the 6-1 victory over MSU.

Michigan State heads to Oxford, Ohio for a match-up with the Red Hawks of Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m.
MSU is 15-6-1 against Miami in their all-time series, having won their 2017 meeting by a final of 3-2. Miami is currently 10-6, but will face conference opponent Appalachian State prior to meeting the Spartans. The Red Hawks are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to No. 10 Louisville last week.
Paula Portugal leads the team in scoring with 35 points on 16 goals and three assists. Portugal ranks No. 5 in the country in goals per game at 1.00 and No. 9 in points per game with 2.19. Kirsten McNeil and Estel Roig are tied for the team-high in assists with six. Goalkeeper Maddie Passarella has allowed 1.20 goals per game with a .678 save percentage in 16 starts. Passarella's goals against average ranks No. 10 in the country.
