NOTES TO KNOW:
• Due to the MHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament, paid public parking will be available at Lot 79, Lot 62, Lot 124, Ramp 7 and Kellogg.Â
• Michigan State secured its third consecutive Big Ten regular season championship last week at Minnesota, winning the Big Ten with 51 points to top Michigan (49) and Penn State (41). It's MSU's second outright title in the last three seasons after sharing a co-championship with Minnesota in 2024-25.
• MSU is 6-2 in Big Ten Tournament games under Adam Nightingale and have won back-to-back Big Ten Tournament Championships. (2-2 in 2022-23, 2-0 in 2023-24, 2-0 in 2024-25).
• The Spartans finished as the conference leaders in goals against average (2.23), save percentage (.927), power play percentage (.309) and penalty kill percentage (.802) during Big Ten action. MSU was third in scoring at 3.67 goals per game through 24 contests.
• Last time Michigan State faced Ohio State the two teams played to a 13-round shootout, the third longest shootout in NCAA DI hockey history and the longest in a Big Ten contest (18 - Harvard at Dartmouth, 2023; 16 - Omaha at Denver, 2025). MSU won the shootout, 3-2.
• Michigan State's power play is clicking at a nation's best .347 percent success rate since January 1 (17-for-49), over its last 16 games. MSU's 4.1 goals per game since 1/1 ranks third nationally.
• Michigan State's top line forwards Daniel Russell - Charlie Stramel - Porter Martone have generated 128 points this season on 53 goals and 75 assists, and are a combined +86 on the ice with Stramel leading with a +30 to Russell's +29 and Martone's +27.
• In Big Ten action, Martone finished #2 in the conference in scoring (20-16-36) while Stramel (11-20-31) was #4 and Russell (8-20-28) was #5. Martone's 20 goals led the Big Ten and the three combined to rank Top 3 in the league in +/-.
• Since January 1, the Russell-Stramel-Martone line has posted 68 points in 16 games (28g-40a-68p). Martone leads the team with 26 points in that span (12-14-26). Stramel's 9 goals rank second on the team in that span. Russell's 14 assists ties Martone to lead all Spartans in that timeframe. Ryker Lee (8-6-14) and Anthony Romani (7-6-13) have also produced double-digit points through the last 16 games.
• Martone (46 points) and Stramel (44 points) mark the first time MSU has produced multiple 40-point scorers in a single season since 2007-08 (Tim Kennedy, 43; Justin Abdelkader, 40). With Daniel Russell sitting at 38 points, MSU has a chance to produce three 40-point scorers for the first time since 2002-03 (John-Michael Liles, 50; Brad Fast, 46; Jim Slater, 44).
• Stramel is #2 nationally in face-off wins (445), #19 in assists per game (0.74), #16 in goals per game (0.56) and #10 in points per game (1.29). His seven game-winning goals this season are tied for the national lead.
• Martone ranks #2 nationally in goals per game (0.72) and #21 in assists per game (0.72), making him #4 in points per game (1.44) to lead all Spartans in points (23g-23a-46p).
• Martone is now third in goals all-time among MSU freshmen with 23 and sits four back of the all-time record set by Rod Brind'Amour in 1988-89 (27). Joe Murphy had 24 in 1985-86. Martone's 46 points are fifth-most by an MSU freshman, five behind Rem Murray's 51 in 1991-92.
• Russell ranks #13 nationally in assists per game (0.79) and #22 in points per game (1.12). He's sixth among all active DI skaters in career points (118).
• Junior goaltender Trey Augustine is among the best in the country ranking #12 in shutouts (3), #8 in goals against average (2.06) and #5 in save percentage (.930). Augustine leads all active goaltenders in career wins (65) and has played in 16 fewer games than the #2 goaltender. Augustine led the Big Ten in wins (23, 2nd NCAA), save percentage (.930, 5th NCAA), and goals against average (2.06, 8th NCAA) this season.
• Michigan State ranks #4 nationally in scoring defense (2.09), #6 in scoring offense (3.79) and #3 in scoring margin (+1.71). MSU leads the Big Ten in scoring defense and is third in scoring offense.
