NOTES TO KNOW:
• For the third straight week, Michigan State holds the No. 1 spot in the NPI, the USA Hockey Poll and the USCHO.com poll. MSU has not been ranked lower than No. 4 in either voted-on poll this season.
• MSU will honor its six graduating seniors on Saturday following the conclusion of the game - Matt Basgall, Daniel Russell, Tiernan Shoudy, Travis Shoudy, Charlie Stramel and Dolan Gilbert.
• Basgall, Russell and Tiernan Shoudy are all four-year players for the Spartans and enter the weekend having played in all 143 games of the Adam Nightingale era to date.
• Michigan State is coming off a home sweep over Notre Dame last week, winning by scores of 4-2 and 8-2. MSU got goals from eight different players, led by Porter Martone's four-goal weekend that included his first career hat trick on Friday night. Ryker Lee scored twice in game two and Daniel Russell finished the weekend with four assists. Trey Augustine posted a .938 save percentage in goal.
• Martone was named the Big Ten's Second Star of the Week for his efforts, leading the conference in goals scored last week after becoming the third Spartan this season to tally a hat trick joining Anthony Romani and Charlie Stramel.
• Michigan State's power play is clicking at a .342 percent success rate since January 1 (13-for-38), ranking second in Division I over its last 12 games. MSU's 4.3 goals per game since 1/1 ranks third.
• Head Coach Adam Nightingale previously coached 15 members of the 25-man 2026 Olympics Team USA gold medal roster in some capacity throughout his career, dating as far back as the 2014-15 World Junior Championships where he was the Video Coach for a squad that featured Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Dylan Larkin and Zach Werenski.
• Michigan State's top line forwards Daniel Russell - Charlie Stramel - Porter Martone have generated 118 points this season on 49 goals and 69 assists, and are a combined +86 on the ice with Stramel leading with a +30 to Russell's +29 and Martone's +27. In Big Ten action only, Martone is #3 in the conference in scoring (17-14-31) while Stramel (11-16-27) and Russell (7-20-27) are tied for #4.
• Since January 1, the Russell-Stramel-Martone line has posted 58 points in 12 games (24g-34a-58p). Martone leads the team with 21 points in that span (9-12-21), tying Stramel for the team-high in goals (9) since the new year. Russell's 14 assists lead all Spartans in that timeframe. Ryker Lee (11) and Anthony Romani (10) have also produced double-digit points since the start of 2026.
• Martone (41 points) and Stramel (40 points) mark the first time MSU has produced multiple 40 point scorers in a single season since 2007-08 (Tim Kennedy, 43; Justin Abdelkader, 40). With Daniel Russell sitting at 37 points, MSU has a chance to produce three 40 point scorers for the first time since 2002-03 (John-Michael Liles, 50; Brad Fast, 46; Jim Slater, 44).
• Stramel is #4 nationally in face-off wins (392), #30 in assists per game (0.70), #10 in goals per game (0.63) and #9 in points per game (1.33). His seven game-winning goals this season are tied for the national lead.
• Stramel has set a career-best in single season points with 40 (19g-21a-40p) this season, topping his 27 from his junior campaign in just 21 games (set 1/15 at Wisconsin).
• Martone ranks #2 nationally in goals per game (0.71) and #19 in assists per game (0.75), making him #3 in points per game (1.46) to lead all Spartans in points (20g-21a-41p).
• Martone is now tied for fourth in goals all-time among MSU freshmen with 20, matching the mark of Rustyn Dolyny (1997-98) and sitting seven back of the all-time record set by Rod Brind'Amour in 1988-89 (27). Joe Murphy had 24 in 1985-86 and Kip Miller tallied 22 in 1986-87. Martone's 41 points are ninth-most by an MSU freshman.
• Russell ranks #8 nationally in assists per game (0.90) and #17 in points per game (1.23). He's fifth among all active DI skaters in career points (117).
• Junior goaltender Trey Augustine is among the best in the country ranking #9 in shutouts (3), #5 in goals against average (1.96) and #4 in save percentage (.932). Augustine leads all active goaltenders in career wins (64) and has played in 14 less games than the #2 goaltender.
• Michigan State ranks #1 nationally in scoring defense (1.97), #5 in scoring offense (3.83) and #3 in scoring margin (+1.87). MSU leads the Big Ten in scoring defense and is third in scoring offense.
