EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 3/3-ranked Michigan State hockey successfully swept Colgate on Friday afternoon, taking down the Raiders 4-1 from Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Arena to conclude its Thanksgiving week non-conference series.
"Good finish to the weekend," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "I liked the way we started. I thought (Eric) Nilson's line was really good, probably our best line, and consistent. We asked our D to be better. I thought they were better. We'll get some rest here and have a great week of practice coming up."
MSU improves to 11-3-0 on the season while Colgate falls to 5-9-2 overall. The Spartans return to the ice at Munn next Friday when it meets top-ranked Michigan at 8:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
Michigan State out-shot Colgate 43-26 overall which included a 19-5 margin in the third period. The Spartans won .529 percent of their face-offs led by 12 wins at the dot by senior Charlie Stramel. MSU was 3-for-4 on the penalty kill and 2-for-3 on the power play on Friday.
Senior Daniel Russell posted three points on Friday including a pair of goals and an assist. Russell was joined by freshman Ryker Lee who tallied a goal and an assist to extend his active consecutive point streak to seven games. Lee has scored a goal in five of MSU's last six contests. Freshman Eric Nilson scored his second goal of the weekend in the first period.
Five other Spartans finished with assists on Friday including junior Maxim Strbak, senior Matt Basgall, freshman Porter Martone, sophomore Shane Vansaghi and Stramel.
Junior Trey Augustine was strong in goal making 25 saves, good for a .962 save percentage. Augustine made 14 saves in the second period including seven in a 22 second span 13 minutes into the period.
How It Happened
Nilson earned his second goal of the weekend to open the scoring late in the first period. Colgate turned the puck over in their defensive zone, with Vansaghi taking it away and finding Nilson unmarked in the slot 16:48 into the frame.
Russell wasted no time increasing the Spartan advantage to 2-0 just 38 seconds into the second period when he deflected a shot into the back of the net that was sent in from the point by Strbak and initially knocked out of the air by Martone. Both sides traded power play goals before the mid-way point of the period. Colgate dug into MSU's lead at the 5:44 mark, but Lee brought the Spartan lead back to two goals with a power play goal of his own 7:53 in. Stramel centered the puck for Lee who capitalized on the back door.
Following two successful penalty kills in the first five minutes of the third, Michigan State capitalized on a power play of its own at the 14:09 mark. Russell deflected in his second goal of the night from the net front after the initial shot was sent in by Basgall.
"Nighty was getting on me a little bit last week for not getting front of the net and being a net presence," Russell said. "So that was a really big focus for me this week. I was able to get in front of the net and get a stick on the first and second goals."
