CONWAY, S.C. – Michigan State softball split a pair of games on its first day at the Chanticleer Showdown on Friday afternoon, defeating Iona, 7-0, and falling to Coastal Carolina, 5-1, at Wade-Lott Field at St. John Stadium.
A split pushes Michigan State's record to 9-10 in non-conference action. The Spartans will look to move above .500 for the first time this season with three remaining games at the Chanticleer Showdown against Yale, Oakland and Iona.
Game One – Michigan State 7, Iona 0
Senior Liv Grey (6-4) struck out a season-high 11 batters en route to her sixth win of the campaign. Grey surrendered just two hits before freshman Ava Mullen came on to finish the combined shutout. Mullen struck out one and completed a double play in her lone inning.
Sophomore Hannah Hawley and junior Macy Lee led with two hits apiece in game one, with Hawley collecting a pair of doubles and scoring twice. Hawley is now the B1G doubles leader with eight on the season.
Senior Alexis Ross, sophomore Britain Beshears, redshirt sophomore Mik Anthony and sophomore Sydney Doloszycki also finished with hits. Beshears tripled, Anthony doubled and Doloszycki homered as the Spartans finished the game with five extra-base hits. Ross, sophomore Hailey Bila and senior Anna Fox all stole bases.
Hawley led the game off with a double to center and later scored on an errant throw into the outfield for the game's first run. A Beshears triple plated the pinch running Bila, with Beshears later scoring on a wild pitch to put the Spartans ahead 3-0 in the first inning.
After a Hawley walk, Lee extended Michigan State's advantage to 4-0 with a single to center that saw Hawley go from first to home.
Doloszycki broke a three-inning scoreless stretch for the Spartans in the sixth with a three-run home run to left. Anthony led-off the inning with a stand-up double before a walk from senior AJ Militello put two on base.
Game Two – Coastal Carolina 5, Michigan State 1
Junior Madison Taylor (1-3) pitched 4.0 innings in the circle, striking out two and allowing three earned runs. Taylor was relieved by junior Faith Guidry who allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings of relief.
Michigan State out-hit the Chanticleers, 8-6, despite the four-run difference in the run column. Junior Macy Lee, sophomore Sydney Doloszycki and freshman Payton Conroy all finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Lee and senior AJ Militello each doubled. Conroy drove in the lone run of the afternoon for MSU.
Coastal Carolina put the game's first run on the board using a pair of walks and a single to their advantage in the first inning. Rain started to fall at St. John Stadium in the bottom of the second as the Chanticleers added another run to their advantage. A two-out single made it 3-0 for Coastal Carolina in the fourth.
Conroy got MSU on the board for the first time in the fifth. Her single to center drove in Militello from second after she led-off the inning with a double.
The Chanticleers extended their lead with a two-run home half of the fifth that put Michigan State in a 5-1 hole. Coastal Carolina took advantage of the wet conditions scoring on a wild pitch and a sac fly later in the inning.
