CONWAY, S.C. – Early offense led Michigan State softball to victory on Saturday as the Spartans defeated Yale, 5-2, on day two of the Chanticleer Showdown at Wade-Lott Field at St. John Stadium.
MSU improves to 10-10 in the non-conference portion of its schedule.
Senior Liv Grey (7-4) matched her season-high of 11 strikeouts, allowing just one hit in five shutout innings. Grey was relieved by senior Ashlyn Roberts, who allowed two earned runs in two innings of work.
Freshman Payton Conroy and senior Collette Allen led Michigan State with two hits apiece. Conroy drew a walk to reach base three times against Yale. Sophomore Hannah Hawley, senior Alexis Ross, sophomore Britain Beshears, redshirt sophomore Mik Anthony and senior AJ Militello also recorded hits.
Hawley and Militello doubled for the Spartans while Beshears slugged her NCAA DI leading 10th home run of the season. Beshears now ranks ninth in program history for single-season home runs. Her three-run shot gave MSU a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Back-to-back base hits put two in scoring position for Ross in the second, allowing her to drive home Conroy from third on a ground out to second. Hawley followed up Conroy's single to center with a double down the left field line.
Anthony extended the Spartan advantage with a two-out single to shallow center in the third. Anthony's second career RBI brought Allen home from second after Allen's second base knock of the afternoon.
Yale answered the Spartans with two runs of its own in the sixth. The Bulldogs were looking for more with two-on, but the inning ended when Ross and Anthony turned a line out double play. Roberts got three quick outs in the seventh to finish things in favor of Michigan State. Ross and Anthony once again teamed up for the final out of the game when they caught a Yale runner attempting to stretch a single into a double.
Michigan State's scheduled contest against Oakland was declared a no-contest following an injury to a Michigan State student-athlete in the top of the fourth inning. Following the injury the student-athlete underwent evaluation at a local hospital. The student-athlete has since been discharged.
