Madison, Wis. – No. 1 Michigan State (12-2-0, 5-1 B1G) rebounded from a Friday night setback with an overtime win over host Wisconsin, 3-2. Isaac Howard scored the game-winner at the three-minute mark of the extra period.
On an extended shift in the OT period, the trio of Howard, Charlie Stramel, and Matt Basgall were on the ice; MSU fought to keep the puck in the offensive zone. From his knees, Howard was able to corral the puck in the left circle and poke it to Stramel just above the faceoff dot. Stramel went across the slot to to Basgall, who settled the puck. Basgall found Howard alone at the left post, and he flipped it past goalie Tommy Scarfone for the game-winner.
MSU trailed 2-0 early in the second period and climbed back into the game with a goal by Stramel on the power play. Joey Larson tied it up led than three minutes into the third period, and fans were treated to end-to-end hockey in the final 17 minutes. Both Howard and Charlie Stramel had a goal and an assist in the victory, and Joey Larson had the other goal for MSU as the Spartans scored three unanswered goals after a 2-0 deficit 23 minutes into the game.
The Badgers scored in the first and again early in the second, staking a 2-0 lead. They frustrated MSU as they clogged passing lanes and were disruptive to any offensive flow that the Spartans tried to generate. Stramel's power play marker looked like it lifted the play of the entire squad, outshooting the home team 17-8 in the second and pushing the game into overtime.
Trey Augustine made 29 saves, while Scarfone made 33 stops for Wisconsin. Christian Fitzgerald had a goal and an assist, while Owen Lindmark had the other goal for Wisconsin (6-9-1 4-6-0 Big Ten).
Michigan State has a final pre-holiday break series next weekend at Minnesota.
STATISTICS OF NOTE
First Period: A slashing call against Howard put the Badgers on the power play late in the first period. The Badgers won the ensuing faceoff back to their D, who passed along the blue line and got it to Christian Fitzgerald in the right circle. Fitzgerald's shot was saved by Augustine, but the rebound was redirected past the goalie by Owen Lindmark, his second goal of the season.
Second Period: An early goal for the Badgers pushed the lead to 2-0. On a rush up the right side, Fitzgerald left it for Kyle Kukkonen, who got a rising shot off to Augustine's left. The puck popped high in the air, and Fitzgerald was there to bat it out of midair for his second point of the night, his second goal of the season. MSU countered with a power play goal at 13:02. Karsen Dorwart dished across the slot to Isaac Howard in the right circle, and he put a shot on net. It caromed high, and Charlie Stramel was able to get a stick on it to make sure it found its intended target. Patrick Geary was able to hold off a three-on-one chance with a sliding block of a pass intended for the low slot, and was able to bat it out of harm's way to save a good look for the Badgers with about 2:30 remaining in the period. The goal seemed to lift the play of the Spartans– MSU looked more poised with the puck and had more offensive flow. MSU finished the period with a 17-8 edge in shots on goal, and the Badgers had to block nine shots in the period.
Third Period: Augustine made two huge saves in the opening seconds of the final period, as the home team came out looking to add to its lead. While the Badgers tried to establish a more sizeable lead early, the up-tempo pace favored the Spartans, who tied the game at 2:24. Nicklas Andrews dished off to Larson at the top of the slot and the junior went to the net, eventually shoveling it home backhand for his fifth goal of the season. The home team had an 11-8 edge in shots on goal, but the Badgers also had to block six additional Spartan attempts to keep the game knotted at 2-2 and send the game to overtime.
Overtime: MSU had the momentum from the later stages of the third period, and outshot Wisconsin 5-1 in the three minutes of free hockey. With the trio of Howard-Stramel-Basgall on the ice for an extended shift that ended the game after three minutes, all fought to keep the puck in the offensive zone, a particularly impressive shift for Howard that resulted in his seventh of the season.
