What you need to know about Spartan Hockey
Â
•  The Spartans have their final games prior to the holiday break  as MSU and Minnesota meet in a two-game set in Minneapolis.  This weekend's matchup features the top two teams in the country in terms of overall winning percentage (Minnesota 15-2-1, .861; MSU 12-2-0, .857).  These two teams, along with Maine, (11-2-2) share the fewest losses of any team in the country. These squads are also the top two offenses in the B1G, which both rank in the top seven nationally - the Gophers average 4.11 goals per game (second), and MSU 3.36 (seventh).  The teams also rank second (MSU, 1.71) and fourth (Minnesota, 1.78) in team scoring defense nationally.
•  Charlie Stramel and Isaac Howard each had a goal and an assist in Saturday's win at Wisconsin, where the Spartans overcame a two-goal deficit.  Howard leads the team in points (17) and assists (10), and in the Big Ten, ranks sixth in points per game (1.21, 16th NCAA).  He has the game-winning goal in each of MSU's two overtime games this season.  Through 14 games, Stramel owns a 4-7-11 scoring line (+6), bettering his sophomore year scoring totals and is one point and one goal shy of his career best in a single season in each category. Â
•  Daniel Russell maintains the team lead in goals (8), which is a tie for sixth in the Big Ten (and also in the fewest games).  He ranks fifth in the league in goals per game (0.57), his 8-3-11 scoring line puts him second on the team in points, and he is tied for the national lead in game-winning goals (5).  Â
• Alternate captain Matt Basgall assisted on Isaac Howard's game-winning goal against Wisconsin on Saturday.  He has points in six of MSU's last seven games, and his 2-8-10 (+8) scoring line is tops among blueliners; he also leads the team with 18 blocked shots,Â
•  Graduate transfer Nicklas Andrews had the lone assist on Joey Larson's game-tying goal at Wisconsin.  He leads the Spartans  with a +12 rating and also owns a 2-7-9 scoring line - second to Basgall in both points and assists among defensemen.  He is second on the squad with 14 blocks.  Through about a third of the season Andrews is more than halfway to his senior-year total of 17 points at CC (3-14-17), which was his career best.
 Â
•  Trey Augustine stopped 51 of 56 shots in the Wisconsin series, with one of Wisconsin's goals scored into an empty net (Friday).  Once again the youngest full-time starting goaltender in college hockey, he is the B1G leader and ranks nationally in wins (10, T-5th NCAA), and shutouts (2, T-5th NCAA), is second in save percentage (.934, 12th NCAA) and third in GAA (1.83, 11th NCAA).  He is also first in the league in games played (12) and second in minutes played (722:23).
