12/14/2024 12:33:00 AM | Men's Ice Hockey
Minneapolis, Minn. – In a matchup of the top-ranked teams in the Big Ten, No. 2/3 Michigan State and No. 1/1 Minnesota skated to a 3-3 tie in Minneapolis on Friday night. MSU took home the extra point in the Big Ten standings with a shootout victory.
Trey Augustine made a season-high 40 saves, keeping the uber-talented Minnesota offense at bay with exceptional saves from the opening period through overtime.
The Spartans (12-2-1, 5-1-1 B1G) surrendered a goal less than 30 seconds into the game, and then took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission thanks to Tiernan Shoudy score early in the period followed by a pair of power play goals from Tanner Kelly and Karsen Dorwart. Brodie Ziemer, who scored the game's opening goal, scored midway through the third period on a major power play to knot the game, and the teams battled through 15 more minutes of scoreless hockey.
In the shootout, Karsen Dorwart and Daniel Russell both scored around Augustine making a glove save on Ziemer. The second shooter for Minnesota, Brody Lamb, who also scored in regulation, saw his offering deflect off the post to secure the shootout victory for the road team.
Minnesota loses its first points in Conference play and is now 8-0-1 and 15-2-2 overall. Gopher goaltender Nathan Airey made 29 stops.
The teams combined for 48 penalty minutes in the contest, with MSU going 2-for-5 on the man advantage and the Gophers 1-for-5. Minnesota finished with a 43-32 edge in shots in net and 20-17 in blocked shots.
The teams each wrap their pre-holiday schedules as they wrap up the series on Saturday. The puck drops at 5 pm in the series finale.

PERIOD RECAPS
First Period: Minnesota got on the board just 23 seconds into the game. MSU tried to clear the zone from below the goal line on the right side, but Jimmy Snuggerud corralled the puck at the half wall. He found Brody Ziemer alone with an empty left side of the net in front of him, and Ziemer one-timed it home for his sixth of the season. That would be the lone goal of the frame, as the Gophers had a 12-9 edge in shots on goal with a pair of power play chances to MSU's one.
Second Period: The teams traded goals in the first 4:09 – MSU tied the game on a goal by Tiernan Shoudy from the top of the right circle at 2:20, but the home team came right back to reclaim the lead with a marker by Brody Lamb. Right after that, the craziness started with penalties -- a combined eight penalties for 27 minutes between the teams, including a five-minute major against Minnesota's Nick Michel, led to seven power play chances. MSU scored the next two goals with the man advantage – first by Tanner Kelly tipping home a Shane Vansaghi pass at 12:19 while skating 5x4, and then a goal with just over four minutes remaining while skating 4x3 when Karsen Dorwart wristed home his third of the season to give MSU its first lead of the night. The shots were an even 13-13 in the period, but MSU converted two of its man advantage chances compared to 0-for-3 for Minnesota.
Third Period: David Gucciardi was whistled for a major penalty at 7:08, giving the home team an extended power play. The Gophers were able to break through four minutes into the advantage, when Ziemer came up the right side, held the puck to get the defenseman to commit, and potted his second of the night at 11:06. At the end of the period, the Gophers had outshot MSU 15-7 in the period, but both goalies were on their game to keep the game knotted at three.
Overtime: MSU had a couple of decent looks over the first minute of OT, but it was the Gophers with the first good chance when Logan Cooley broke in alone – but Augustine made the save on the breakaway. MSU had an odd-man rush of its own with 96 seconds remaining, when Howard streaked in with Ryan Chesley on his hip, and Stramel had a shot on the rebound – after a lengthy review, the puck on Stramel's redirect did not completely cross the line, and the teams played on. Ailey stoned Howard a second time in the extra period with nine seconds remaining.
