East Lansing, Mich.. – No. 15 Michigan State fought back within a goal after a first period three-goal deficit but fell to No. 5 Michigan 4-2 as the Wolverines iced the game late with an empty net tally.
Michigan took a 3-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game, but Michigan State (15-14-2, 9-10-2 B1G) waged a valiant comeback effort, scoring in the second and third periods to pull within a goal. Dylan St. Cyr made 24 of his 26 saves over the balance of regulation, allowing his team to get back into it.
The game was its usual emotional tilt, as the teams combined for 105 penalty minutes and a pair of ejections that will keep both Adam Fantilli (Michigan) and Nash Nienhuis (MSU) out of Saturday's rematch at Little Caesars Arena. MSU outshot its visitors 24-17 over the second and third periods as it got back into the game and 32-31 overall.
Tiernan Shoudy got MSU on the board in the second period (4:54), converting a nice pass from captain Miroslav Mucha for his fifth of the season. The Spartans inched closer with Nicolas Müller's power play marker with under six minutes gone in the third and came close to an equalizer as the game inched towards conclusion.
Gavin Brindley had two goals and an assist, while Adam Fantilli had a goal and an assist for Michigan (19-9-1, 11-8-0 Big Ten) before earning a game DQ in the second period. Mackie Samoskevich had the other goal for the Wolverines.
The teams meet for the fourth and final time in the regular season on Saturday. Puck drop at Little Caesars Arena is at 8 pm, and will air live on ESPN U.

PERIOD SUMMARIES
First Period: With the game just over three minutes old, the Spartans had already forced two UM turnovers in front of Portillo, and forced the netminder to bail out his team with saves. At 3:17, the Wolverines had some sustained pressure down low, and TJ Hughes fed Mackie Samoskevich in the right circle, and he one-timed the puck past St. Cyr for the early lead. The first power play chance for the potent Wolverine unit came at 7:19, and it took less than 30 seconds for freshman Adam Fantilli to put a second goal for Michigan on the board. Luke Hughes set up the goal, finding Fantilli on the late zone entry and he ripped a nasty shot from the high slot. The visitors added a third at 11:23, when Gavin Brindley's shot from the half wall from the left side found its mark. The Spartans appeared to get on the board in the final minutes of the period on what would have been freshman Viktor Hurtig's first goal of his career, but it was called a no goal due to goalie interference. The Wolverines had a 14-8 shot advantage in the period.
Second Period: Tiernan Shoudy got MSU on the board in at 4:54, as the Spartans scored on transition. Nash Nienhuis got the puck up to Shoudy to drive the Spartans out of the defensive zone, and got the puck to Miroslav Mucha. Mucha collected the puck above the left circle, and fed it to Shoudy for the freshman's fifth of the season (and second against the Wolverines). Around the midpoint of the period, the penaties started to stack up – first a contact to the head major on Ethan Edwards that came with a game misconduct for a high hit on Matt Basgall, and an after-the-whistle melee that resulted in fighting majors for Adam Fantilli and Nash Nienhuis. The teams got out of the period with no further drama, as MSU outshot their guests 15-7 in the frame.
Third Period: A early too many men penalty against the Wolverines gave the Spartans a power play chance with about five minutes elapsed. Daniel Russell had the puck on the right side below the goal line and went through the low slot to Karsen Dorwart at the top of the left circle. Dorwart quickly moved it to Nicolas Müller at the right hash, and he sniped his sixth of the season and third in as many games. MSU came close to an equalizer, forcing Portillo to make eight third-period saves in total. With St. Cyr on the bench in favor of an extra skater, the Wolverines got a second from Brindley, and more extracurriculars ensued that led to an additional 16 minutes for MSU and 14 for Michigan.
