East Lansing -- Michigan State got the game-winning goal from Daniel Russell with under four minutes remaining and an impressive 32-save performance from Dylan St. Cyr as MSU upended No. 10/11 Ohio State, 4-2 on Thursday night at Munn Ice Arena.
The Spartans (7-3-1, 3-1-1 Big Ten) have now won three straight Big Ten contests and taken points out of four straight B1G games overall after winning the shootout at Notre Dame on Oct. 29. Michigan State has won three straight Big Ten games for the first time since January of 2019.
The teams were tied after the first intermission (1-1) as well as the second (2-2), with the game-winner scored by Russell at 16:24 of the third. He pounced on a loose puck in the slot and sent it netward, finding its way past Dobes for the lead. Justin Jallen iced the victory with an empty-netter with under a minute remaining.
Russell extended his team lead in points, adding a goal and two assists to improve to 14 points (4-10—14). Three of the four goals on the night came from freshmen: both Matt Basgall and Karsen Dorwart had goals, each their second of the season. Jagger Joshua had a two-assist night.
Tyler Duke and Jake Wise were the goal scorers for the Buckeyes (7-3-1, 3-2-0 B1G), and Jakub Dobes made 24 saves.
The teams wrap up the series on Friday night at 7 pm at Munn Ice Arena.
STATISTICS OF NOTE
Second Period: MSU took its first lead of the game six minutes into the second. Daniel Russell and Jagger Joshua sped into the offensive zone, and Russell left the puck at the right hashmarks for a trailing Karsen Dorwart Dorwart spun and threw the puck on the net, beating Jakub Dobes for a 2-1 MSU lead. Later in the period, the Spartans got caught a bit flat-footed at the end of a power play, which sprung Jake Wise on a breakaway as the penalty expired. He beat St. Cyr for his fifth of the season, tying things up. MSU outshot their guests 14-10 in the frame, and the teams ended the period the way they started – in a tie game.
Third Period: Ohio State had the first six shots on net in the period, but the Spartans were active and had a pair of grade-A chances (by Mucha and Shoudy) turned away by Dobes. The MSU persistence paid off at 16:24 – Jagger Joshua had another great look, and Daniel Russell pounced on the loose puck in the slot for what would stand as the game-winner. Justin Jallen scored his first as a Spartan, an empty-netter, for the final 4-2 score.

Just like that, we're tied at 1-1 - Spartans tie it up with a PPG from Basgall. pic.twitter.com/hVAWIvTXDh
