Russell's Late Goal Propels Spartans To Road Win, 2-1

Bowling Green, Ohio -- Daniel Russell scored his second goal of the year with 3:45 remaining to propel Michigan State to a 2-1 victory over Bowling Green on the road on Saturday night.
Russell scored the game-winner and second goal of the weekend on the power play, finishing a pass from Nicolas Müller and putting it past Christian Stoever for the game-winner late in the third period. BG's Hunter Lettig was called for hitting from behind at 14:35, a play which was reviewed and became a major penalty. That gave MSU a five-minute advantage to close out the game, and Russell did his part to put MSU on the bus back to East Lansing with a victory.
Bowling Green (2-2) took the lead for the second straight night, scoring at 5:23 of the first period. Ryan O'Hara netted his third goal of the weekend to put the home team in front, and they held the lead through the first intermission.
MSU (1-1) got the equalizer from Tiernan Shoudy 2:50 into the second, as he converted a pass from the left circle off a feed from Tanner Kelly. It was his first collegiate tally, and knotted the score. MSU held a significant lead in shots on goal in each of the three periods, and finished with a 42-shot effort while holding Bowling Green to just 16.
Dylan St. Cyr stopped 16 shots in the game, as MSU played a sound defensive game and made his job a bit easier. Christian Stover made 39 saves and allowed MSU's game-winner to take the loss. Kyle Rose played 4:23 late in the first period and into the second, and gave up the Shoudy goal.
The win was the first in the head coaching career for Adam Nightingale, who was hired in May to guide the hockey program at his alma mater.
MSU hosts No. 15 UMass-Lowell next week in a non-conference series. Games are Thursday (7 pm) and Friday (7:30 pm) at Munn Ice Arena.
STATISTICS OF NOTE
First Period: The Spartans were man-down due to a too many men penalty less than five minutes into the game. St. Cyr came up with a pair of early saves against the man advantage, but at 5:34, Ryan O'Hara wristed a shot through traffic and into the back of the net for an 1-0 lead. MSU killed off a second penalty before the game was 10 minutes old, but turned up the intensity – the Spartans were getting to the net, peppering Stoever with shots, and continuing the offensive flow it had found in the third period last night in East Lansing. The Spartans had a 17-7 edge in shots on net in the period.
Second Period: The Spartans tied the game up just shy of the three-minute mark of the second frame. Tanner Kelly found Tiernan Shoudy streaking into the left circle, and he beat Rose with a laser. Shortly after, Christian Stover returned to the crease after leaving with an injury in the final minute of the second period. With 8:29 elapsed, the Falcons took a contact to the head-roughing call behind the play, giving the Spartans a second power play chance. MSU forced Stoever to make four saves on the kill, and at the end Jagger Joshua was sent off for slashing. Christian Kryier was stoned on a shorthanded wraparound attempt, and Dubinsky was also sprung on a shorthanded breakaway, refusing to allow the home team any momentum from the man advantage. The physicality and chippiness increased as the period wore on, but the fans were also treated to end-to end chances. Stoever was excellent for the home team – he turned back several grade-A chances which seemed destined for the back of the net, keeping the game tied
Third Period: The physical play carried into the third period by both teams, and the home team had a chance around the middle of the period with Cole Krygier sent off for hitting from behind. St. Cyr made two stops on the PK – including a big pad save on Dalton Norris – that kept the game tied. With 5:25 to play, Hunter Lellig was whistled for boarding, and after review it was changed to a major – giving the Spartans a man advantage for the balance of the game. With 3:45 to play, Russell played the role of hero, potting the power-play goal off a pass from Nicolas Muller to make it a 2-1 game.
