Spartans Move to 2-0 with Shutout over Saint Louis

KENT, Ohio – Capturing the Spartans' first shutout of the 2021 season, Michigan State's field hockey team downed Saint Louis, 4-0, in a neutral-site contest Saturday afternoon at Kent State's Murphy-Mellis Field in Kent, Ohio.
MSU improved to 2-0 overall with the victory, with four different Spartans finding the back of the net, while the Billikens moved to 0-1 after dropping their season opener.
After a three-goal output against Kent State on Friday, the Spartans picked up where they left off in the first period of Saturday's contest. senior Cara Bonshak put the Green and White up early, scoring her first goal of the campaign in the 15th minute off a penalty corner.
The scoresheet would go quiet until the second half, when graduate student Maddie Babineau set up senior Isa van der Weij in the 38th minute, giving van der Weij her first tally of the fall.
Freshman Ellie Rutherford increased the Spartan lead to 3-0 in the 51st minute, beating the Billikens goalkeeper for the first goal of her collegiate career. Sophomore Ashley Harlock quickly followed with her own score in the 53rd minute, as the sophomore garnered her first goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Jade Arundell registered two saves and earned her second win of the season, as well as notching the seventh shutout of her career. Her SLU counterpart, Sasha Sander, made 11 saves in the losing effort.
The Spartans took the shot advantage, recording 22 shots to Saint Louis' 10 shots, while also having 12 penalty corner attempts, compared to eight for the Billikens.
MSU will return to action on Friday, Sept. 3, when the Spartans play Northeastern in another neutral-site tilt. That contest is set for 1 p.m. in Athens, Ohio.
