Field Hockey Improves to 3-0 with Win over Northeastern
9/3/2021 6:05:00 PM | Field Hockey
ATHENS, Ohio – A two-goal game from junior Merel Hanssen and some key saves by senior Monique Jardell helped the Michigan State Spartans shut out Northeastern, 3-0, in non-conference, neutral-site field hockey action Friday afternoon at Pruitt Field.
The win propelled MSU to its first 3-0 start since the 2019 campaign, while the Huskies dropped to 0-3 overall with the loss.
"I am proud of the team on their performance today against a fiesty and quick Northeastern squad," said head coach Helen Knull. "The team executed our game plan and we scored some excellent goals in transition. Mo had some fantastic saves in goals for us late in the game to keep a clean sheet. It feels good to be 3-0 and we're looking to carry this momentum into Sunday's game against Ohio."
Neither squad was able to score in the opening 15 minutes, but the second period changed that when sophomore Lulu Fulton tallied her first goal of the season off an assist from Hanssen in the 19th minute.
Hanssen added to the Spartans' lead in the 26th minute on an unassisted goal, sending the Green and White into the intermission with a 2-0 edge and giving Hanssen her first tally of the season. The junior midfielder got on the scoresheet again in the 42nd minute, closing out the day for both sides on a Fulton-assisted goal. The two tallies marked Hanssen's first multi-goal performance in her time with the Spartans, and the contest was Fulton's first career multi-point game as well.
Jardell posted her first career shutout with the clean sheet, making 10 saves for the Spartans. Her Huskies counterpart, Erin Savage, recorded six saves in the loss before Julia Gluyas took over for the final 15 minutes.
Michigan State wraps up its four-game road stretch on Sunday, taking on Ohio in a 1 p.m. matinee.
