EAST LANSING – Notre Dame scored a pair of power-play goals and defeated the Michigan State hockey team 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Munn Ice Arena. Goaltender Drew DeRidder stopped 32 shots for Michigan State, while Notre Dame's Dylan St. Cyr made 29 stops for the shutout.
"Tough series and tough game tonight," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "One thing we talked about was the intensity and physicality and how hard you have to play, not just against Notre Dame, but against anyone. It's something we've been working on lately and trying to establish and get a little back in our game. I thought tonight that was has hard as we've worked. They battled right to the end. We lost the special teams battle but the guys gave us a chance."
A major penalty to Jagger Joshua 4:41 into the first period sent Notre Dame to the power play. The Irish threw nine shots on goal at DeRidder during the 5-minute major and the goaltender got all but one – a one-timer by Colin Theisen from between the circles at the 8:16 mark that gave ND a 1-0 lead.
Michigan State outshot Notre Dame 15-11 in the second period and a major penalty for elbowing to Notre Dame's Colin Theisen with 34 seconds to go in the stanza gave the Spartans a chance to tie the game, but they couldn't solve St. Cyr.
Notre Dame (12-12-2, 10-10-2-1-2-2) upped the lead to 2-0 with 8:50 to go with another power-play goal. Landon Slaggert got the puck off the right post, spun toward the net and flipped the puck toward the net. DeRidder got a piece of the shot, but the puck bounced up and off a body and into the net.
The Spartans had another power play try late in the third and a shot by Dennis Cesana got past St. Cyr, but bumped off the post and bounced away.
Following the game, Michigan State (7-15-2, 5-14-1-2-1-0) honored its eight-member senior class with an on-ice ceremony as Charlie Combs, Mitchell Lewandowski, Tommy Apap, Tommy Miller, Brody Stevens, Jake Smith, Austin Kamer and Gianluca Esteves were all recognized.
"These guys bought in as freshman class. They've worked hard. They're extremely close," Cole said. "I told them after the game that regardless of where this season ends up, what they've left here is a pretty good legacy. They've taught the young guys behind them."
Michigan State will host No. 5 Wisconsin next Friday and Saturday at Munn.
