EAST LANSING – No. 5 Wisconsin scored twice in each of the first two periods and defeated the Michigan State hockey team, 4-0, on Friday at Munn Ice Arena in what is the final series of the regular season.
"It was an interesting game. Obviously, we were on the short end of it – not where we wanted to be against a pretty good hockey team," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "There were a decent amount of things that I thought that we've been working on that the guys are doing alright. We have to get keep pushing.
"We'll press on. What we did well, we'll do again tomorrow, and what we were ok at we'll do better tomorrow."
UW goaltender Robbie Beydoun made 28 saves for the shutout.
Both of Wisconsin's goals in the second period came on the power play. Following the second goal, freshman Pierce Charleson replaced starter Drew DeRidder and turned away all 20 shot he faced the rest of the way.
The Badgers (18-8-1, 16-6-1-1-1-0) made it 1-0 1:49 into the opening period when a rebound bounced right out to Tarek Baker, who collected the puck low between the circles and was able to rifle it high into the far corner of the net.
The Badgers made it 2-0 following the conclusion of a Spartan power play as a blocked shot sprung Jack Gorniak down the right side. Gorniak took the puck in 2-on-1 and his pass wound up bouncing off the skate of a Spartan defender and into the net with 11:48 to go in the first period.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal 7:38 into the second period. Off a faceoff win in the Spartan zone, the Badgers were able to get the puck to Cole Caufield at the left point, who found the back of the net with a low shot to the far corner.
Another power-play goal with 8:33 to go in the second period, this time by Ty Pelton-Byce, made it 4-0 Badgers.
The Spartans (7-15-2, 5-15-1-2-1-0) went 0-for-4 on the man-advantage, while Wisconsin was 2-for-3.
The two teams will close the regular season on Saturday when they meet at 2:30 p.m.
