EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State field hockey improved to 5-3 on the season with a 3-1 win over Ball State Sunday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.
The Spartans used a balance scoring attack with goals from sophomore Aisha Osinga, Meredith Ross and Lia Sinisi, while junior midfielder Cara Bonshak recorded her sixth assist of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Arundell racked up six saves in the win.
"It was great to rebound today and make adjustments from Friday. Having three different Spartans score and contribute to the score line was great for team hockey," said ninth-year head coach Helen Knull.
Ball State took control early in the contest, collecting three penalty corners and five shots in the first period. Arundell, who made her 28th-consecutive start in goal for the Spartans, grabbed four early saves in the first period. MSU took control in the second period, tallying four penalty corners to Ball State's one.
Osinga recorded her third goal of the season at the 28th minute, after a well- designed play and feeds from Ross and Bonshak on a penalty corner. With just under a minute to play in the first half, Ross tallied her third goal of the season after she fired in a shot near the baseline to put the Spartans up 2-0.
The Spartans remained in control at the start of the third period after freshman Celina Riccardo provided a stellar cross pass to Sinisi who tapped it in near the goal to push the Spartan lead to three.
The Cardinals answered back at the 38th minute when Rachel Pereira snuck a shot past Arundell off a penalty corner. Michelle Shampton and Jenna McKune provided the assists.
MSU hits the road for three of their next four and a pair of Big Ten contests against No. 13 Northwestern (Sept. 27) and No. 8 Iowa (Sept. 29).
"We are looking forward to getting on the road after a three-week homestand. We will reset and have a great week of practice in preparation of Iowa and Northwestern," Knull added.
