
No. 24 Michigan State Falls Short at No. 7 Northwestern, 4-1

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State field hockey team hung around early, before falling, 4-1, to No. 7 Northwestern Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Arundell recorded a career-high 14 saves for the Spartans, including nine in the second half. Junior forward Lia Sinisi tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season, while freshman Nienke Bloemsaat recoded her second defensive save of the season.
Northwestern, who ranks third in the Big Ten in scoring, tested the Spartans in the first eight minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Jade Arundell corralled five saves in the first half, on nine shots by the Wildcats. MSU put on a strong defensive effort for 27 minutes, before Kirsten Mansfield fired in a goal off a rebound on NU's third penalty corner of the half to go up 1-0 at the half.
The Spartans had multiple opportunities near the 25-minute mark with shots from Meredith Ross and Aisha Osinga from the top of the cage that were corralled by goalkeeper Florien Macussen. MSU finished with four shots at the half to Northwestern's nine.
The Wildcats pushed the lead to 2-0 behind an Ana Medina Garcia goal at the 38th minute. Bente Baekers followed with her 15th goal of the season on a penalty stroke at the 48-minute mark. The Spartans got on the board late in the fourth off a rebound goal from Sinisi after a penalty corner. Baekers pushed the Wildcat lead to 4-1 with just under two minutes to play in regulation.
Michigan State totaled five penalty corners for the game, all in the fourth quarter, while Northwestern registered 10. The Wildcats outshot MSU, 22-10. Osinga led the Spartans with three shots, while Ross and Isa van der Weij added two.
