MSU rips four extra-base hits
Michigan State's late-game rally fell just short on Friday, falling to Maryland 11-9 on Friday night at Secchia Stadium.
The Terrapins (18-17, 2-5 Big Ten) plated nine runs over the first two innings and took a 10-0 lead with a single run in the top of the fourth, a stretch in which MSU also committed three errors. Starter Sydney Golden sent down the Spartans in order in each of the first three innings, but those looks from the batting order paid off as MSU scored three in the fourth, four in the fifth, and almost came all the way back with a pair of runs in the seventh.
The Spartans got a pair of extra-base hits from freshman MacKenzie Meech, who doubled, homered, and scored three runs on the day. Melanie Baccay as 2-for-4 with a triple, and Caitie Ladd was 2-for-4, which included a bases-loaded double.
Maryland rattled off 14 base hits, including three doubles; Amanda Brashear and Taylor Wilson both went 3-for-4, while Jojo McRae was 2-for-5. Golden picked up her 11th victory in the circle, going 4.1 innings and scattering just five hits, walking two and striking out two.
Michigan State continues its series against Maryland on Saturday at 1 pm.
QUOTABLE
"I liked our fight to get back in the game – the game got away from us in those early innings where we had some errors and they scored a lot of runs in their first two at-bats. I liked the way we handled ourselves once we got settled down – it ended up being not enough in the end, but we never checked out or considered the game over. We need to come with a better approach and focus in the early innings tomorrow. "
Head Coach Jacquie Joseph

STATS AND STORYLINES
- Maryland came out of the gates like gangbusters, scoring four runs in the top of the first. JoJo McRae led off the game with a double down the left field line, and Amanda Brashear singled and advanced to second on a throwing error that allowed McRae to score. A passed ball and ground ball scored Brashear, and a walk to Bailey Boyd left runners at the corners. The Spartans made a pitching change to bring on Leah Shipp. Sami Stefan launched a sac fly to right to plate a third run, and a single by Taylor Wilson scored Boyd to make it 4-0.
- Maryland kept their offense going in the second with a Micaela Abbatine single to lead off the inning. A fielder's choice by McRae added a runner to the basepaths, and Abbatine came around to score on a throwing error, leaving runners at second and third. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Georgia Vulgaris reached on an error to send Brashear to third. A double by Stefan plated two more runs, and a single by Wilson brought Stefan around for the fifth run of the inning to make it a 9-0 lead – with the Terps getting some help from a pair of MSU errors in the frame.
- MSU went back to Alli Walker in the third inning, and the Terrapins leaded the bases. The Spartans got out of the frame with no damage when Walker struck out Boyd with the bases loaded. In the fourth, Walker got the first two outs before walking Regan Kerr, and Abbatine followed with a double that kissed the left field line to bring home Kerr to make it 10-0.
- The Spartans cut into the lead in the fourth inning. Having been through the lineup once, Melanie Baccay led off the frame with a single up the middle, and between walks to Charla and Ebonee Echols, MacKenzie Meech reached on a fielder's choice. Caitie Ladd came up with the bases loaded, and promptly un-loaded them with a double to right center to bring the Spartans to a 10-3 deficit.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans came closer. A single by Katie Quinlan was followed by a one-out triple from Melanie Baccay to score Quinlan, and then a single by Charla Echols plated Baccay to make it 10-5. The Terps made a pitching change to bring on junior Kiana Carr, and MacKenzie Meech stepped in and launched her fourth homer of the season over the wall in left to make it a three-run deficit. Ladd reached on a fielder's choice after Ebonee Echols walked, and Karr walked Eveland to put two runners on, but they were stranded.
- The Terps added a run in the top of the seventh to push their lead back out to four, 11-7. McRae started things off with a one-out single, stole second, and went to third on a sac bunt by Brashear. Kufta laced a bloop single into shallow center to plate McRae.
- The Spartans led off the seventh with a double by Meech, and Ladd laced a single up the left field line with one out to put runners at the corners. A sac fly by Eveland – and a throw home that was off the mark – allowed both Meech and Ladd to come home, trimming the deficit to 11-9.
