Spartans Rally for win over Terps
Senior Kelly Zackrison's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Michigan State a 8-7 victory in eight innings over visiting Maryland on Saturday.
The Spartans improve to 2-6 in the Big Ten and 13-22 overall with its second win in the last three games. Maryland falls to 2-6 and 18-18.
Zackrison, who was honored with her Senior Day prior to today's game, brought home Ebonee Echols from third base with the winning run. The senior also had a base hit earlier in the game.
Caitie Ladd was 3-for-4 with four RBI, finishing a single short of the cycle – she had a triple, a homer, and a double. No other player had multiple hits, but every starter had base hit. McKenna Gregory both started and finished the game, picking up her fourth win of the season. She threw six innings and scattered 10 hits, surrendering just three earned runs. Leah Shipp tossed two innings of middle relief.
Maryland reliever Sami Main worked out of bases-loaded jams in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, including the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. She took the loss to fall to 3-7, walking five in her 4.2 innings, scattering seven base hits. Her leadoff hitter JoJo McRae was 4-for-5 on the day, while Sammie Stefan was3-for-4 with a solo homer in the fifth that gave Maryland a 7-6 lead after the Spartans had tied the game.
The rubber match of the series is Sunday at 1 pm at Secchia Stadium.
QUOTABLE
"One of the best things I can say about our team is just how resilient we are. We gave up some early runs today but never felt out of it – we came back right away. We had opportunities with the bases loaded three times in the late innings, and instead of being frustrated and mentally taking ourselves out of it, we continued to battle and came through. You cannot write a better script than Kelly Zackrison bringing in the winning run on her senior day, either. We want to be ready to play tomorrow, and come out and attack this finale and win the series. "
Head Coach Jacquie Joseph

STATS AND STORYLINES
- As they did in Friday's opener, the Terps rallied for four runs in their first at-bat to take a 4-0 lead.
- Michigan State countered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the first. Melanie Baccay led off the inning with a walk, and moved to third on a single by Charla Echols. MacKenzie Meech's sac fly brought home Baccay for the first run of the inning, and with two outs on the board, Caitie Ladd tripled off the wall in right center to score Charla Echols, and a wild pitch brought home Ladd to cut the Maryland lead to 4-3.
- In the bottom of the third, the Spartans got home runs from Caitie Ladd and Kaitlyn Eveland to put three runs on the scoreboard and take their first lead of the game, 6-5. It was Ladd's seventh of the season, and Eveland's fifth.
- Maryland tied the game at 6-6 on an RBI double in the top of the fourth. The leadoff, JoJo McRae, singled up the middle and stole second, and then came home on an RBI double by Amanda Brashear.
- MSU had its first two batters – Kelly Zackrison and Shae Schrecekengost – reach on back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fourth. Melanie Baccay's sac bunt moved the runners into scoring position, and Charla Echols was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. The Terps got out of the inning, however, on a force play at home and then a caught stealing as the ball got away from the catcher.
- Maryland regained the lead in the top of the fifth when Sammie Stefan led off the inning with a solo homer to left. The Spartans loaded the bases in the home half of the frame with just one out for the second straight inning, but a popup and a lineout ended the Spartan threat.
- The Spartans finally broke through again in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single by Baccay followed by a Charla Echols walk put two runners on, and after a fielder's choice allowed Ebonee Echols to reach and a popup, Caitie Ladd doubled to score Charla Echols and knot the game at 7-7.
- After holding the Terps off the board in the top of the seventh, the Spartan offense went back to work. Joanna Bartz and Katie Quinlan both singled around Zackrison reaching on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs. The Terps got forceouts on the next two batters, with ground balls to short and second, and then pitcher Sami Main worked out of the jam for the third time.
- McKenna Gregory worked an efficient 1-2-3 inning in the top of the eighth, the first time the Terps went down in order in the game.
- Ebonee Echols walked to lead off the top of the eighth, and Ladd moved her to second with a sac bunt. After walking Eveland on four pitches, Main hit Bartz to load the bases for the Spartans for the fourth time in five innings. Kelly Zackrison launched a 1-0 pitch into center for a sac fly that plated Echols.
- Zackrison's senior day was celebrated prior to the contest as she was joined on the field by her family. Zackrison is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar selection, and is a Special Education/Disabilities major.
