EAST LANSING, Mich. -- On a cold and rainy Friday afternoon in East Lansing, the Michigan State field hockey team fell to the University of Iowa by a final score of 4-0 at Ralph Young Field.
With a loss the Spartans' record drops to 4-8 on the season and 0-4 in Big Ten action. The No. 13-ranked Hawkeyes improved to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
An improved defense from Michigan State held the Hawkeyes scoreless in the first half, Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell made five first half saves on six total shots in an effort the keep the game tied at zero. Michigan State's defense held strong on four Iowa penalty corner attempts in the first.
As the rain began to pick up, Iowa tallied the first goal of the game. Iowa's Ellie Holley connected on the feed from Maddy Murphy to score from the left post.
Iowa extended their lead to two (2-0) just three minutes later as Sophie Sunderland deflected a Makenna Grewe shot past Arundell from the left post.
