Spartans Show Improved Defense in Loss to Northwestern

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Two days after holding No. 13-ranked Iowa scoreless through the first half, the Michigan State field hockey team did the same against No. 10-ranked Northwestern on Sunday, September 30. Despite improvement on the defensive side of the ball, the Spartans came up short against the Wildcats, falling by a final score of 2-0 at Ralph Young Field.
With a loss the Spartans fall to 4-9 overall and 0-5 in the Big Ten. Northwestern improved to 8-5 with a 3-1 mark in conference action.
In what MSU head coach Helen Knull described as a "complete game effort," the Spartans allowed just two goals (both coming via penalty corner) in the second half of play. Northwestern out-shot MSU 18-3 overall and 11-0 in shots on goal, while holding an 11-0 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell turned in one of her best performances of late making nine saves on 11 shots faced. Arundell made two saves in the first half as the Spartans held the Wildcats scoreless. In the second half, Arundell made seven saves, including this one on a shot by Northwestern's Kaitlin Woods.
Northwestern broke through the Spartan defense in the 43rd minute on a ball that was deflected in, to take a 1-0 lead over Michigan State.
Senior's Maddie Vann and Amanda Robinson nearly connected for the game-tying goal in the 51st minute, but Vann's shot fell just wide of goal following the feed from Robinson.
Wildcat forward Puck Pentenga extended the Northwestern lead in the 68th minute after her shot on goal bounced around a found it's way into the cage following a penalty corner.
What's Next?
Before playing its final home contest of the regular season, the Michigan State field hockey team travels to Indiana University on Oct. 5 and Louisville on Oct. 7. Indiana is currently winless in the Big Ten with just one goal scored in conference action this season. Louisville is currently ranked No. 8 in the NFHCA Top 25 Poll and are one of ten ranked opponents the Spartans will face throughout the regular season.
