Field Hockey Falls in Big Ten Road Opener

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Playing in their first Big Ten road contest of the season, the Michigan State field hockey team fell to No. 17-ranked Rutgers by a final score of 5-1 on Friday, September 19 at the Bauer Track and Field complex.
Michigan State falls to 4-6 and 0-2 in Big Ten action while the Scarlet Knights improve to 7-1 on the season and 1-1 in conference contests.
The Spartans were out-shot 14-2 overall and 8-2 in shots on goal. Both of Michigan State's shots on goal came in the second half. Rutgers held a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners.
MSU's defense held Rutgers scoreless through the opening 18 minutes of the contest before ceding the first of the Scarlet Knights' five goals on the afternoon at the 18:47 mark.
Freshman Isa van der Weij got Michigan State in the scoring column with a goal in the 53rd minute. van der Weij collected a ball that was deflected in front of goal and placed it past the Rutgers goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season. A native of Bussum, the Netherlands, van der Weij leads the Spartans in goals with four and points with 10.

Penn St. is 5-2 in 2018 with ranked wins over Virginia, Ohio State and Boston. The Nittany Lions will face Michigan prior to the Spartans coming to town on Sunday.
Anna Simon and Aurelia Meijer are tied for the team leads in points with nine apiece. Simon has four goals and one assist with Meijer has three goals and three assists. Alexis Horst is tied for the team lead in goals with four.
Jenny Rizzo leads the team in goal with a .800 save percentage that ranks ninth in the country. Rizzo's 1.20 goals against average ranks No. 11 in Division I. Rizzo and the rest of the Nittany Lion back line have earned four shutouts in their first seven games.
The Nittany Lions are led by long-time head coach Charlene Morett-Curitss who owns a career record of 522-206-17 over 35 seasons.
