Aisha Osinga and Amanda Robinson scored goals for the Spartans
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Michigan State field hockey team scored twice in the second half on Sunday, earning a 2-0 victory over Quinnipiac at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium.
Both sides are now 2-2 on the season. Michigan State is 1-2 against Big East opponents this season and 3-0 all-time against the Bobcats.
Michigan State out-shot Quinnipiac 11-8 overall and held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Spartans took seven shots to just two for the Bobcats in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the cage. Teams were even in penalty corners at seven apiece.
MSU's offense started strong taking five shots and placing two on goal in the first 10 minutes of action. Equally as potent was the Spartan defense, who didn't allow a shot on goal for the entirety of the first half. Michigan State's defense didn't allow a shot on goal until the 40th minute of play when a Valerie Perkins shot was saved by freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell.
Arundell and the Spartan defense completed their first shutout of the season, with Arundell improving her save percentage to .700.
Freshman Aisha Osinga added the first tally to the scoreboard in the 37th minute for her second goal in the last three games. Senior Amanda Robinson extended the Spartans lead to 2-0 in the 43rd minute, scoring the first goal of her Spartan career. Robinson had appeared in 55 games for Michigan State prior to scoring her first goal.
Both Spartan goals were assisted on by reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week, Isa van der weij, who is tied with Osinga for the team lead in points with four.
