Michigan State will face UConn, Quinnipiac, and Yale in a four-day stretch

After opening the 2018-19 regular season with a 1-1 split against Old Dominion and Kent State last weekend at home, the Michigan State field hockey team hits the road for the first time. The Spartans start the roadtrip strong facing-off against defending national champion UConn on August 31, before heading to Quinnipiac University on September 2, and Yale University on September 3.

Last Time Out
The Michigan State University field hockey team earned its first victory of the season on Sunday, August 26 defeating Kent State University in overtime by a final score of 3-2. Freshman Isa van der Weij scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute to earn sudden victory for the Spartans.
After being held scoreless against Old Dominion in the season opener, the MSU offense broke out in a big way on Sunday, leading to 18 total shots and 11 shots on goal. The Spartans were out-shot 11-7 in the first half, but bested Kent State 11-4 in total shots during the second half and overtime.
van der Weij named Big Ten Freshman of the Week
Isa van der Weij was been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday, August 27. van der Weij has been a key component of the Spartan offense in 2018 finishing each of her first two collegiate games with three shots taken. Against Kent State on Sunday, August 26, van der Weij registered three shots on goal and come up clutch for Michigan State scoring the game-winning goal in the 77th minute.
This is the first time a Michigan State field hockey player has won a Big Ten Player of the Week award since Kendal Anderson was tabbed as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on September 6, 2016. Allie Ahern was the last Spartan to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week (October 18, 2011).

Scouting the Huskies
UConn opened their season strong with wins over No. 12-ranked Northwestern and No. 15-ranked Stanford. The Huskies defeated the Wildcats 4-2 before dismantling the Cardinals by a final score of 3-0. Freshman Karo Kueskes is the leading scorer for UConn with three goals and one assist through two games. Svea Boker leads the team in assists with three, all coming against Northwestern.Â
In goal for UConn is Cheyenne Sprecher making the third start of her career. Sprecher owns a .714 save percentage through two games with five saves on 12 shots faced.
Head Coach Nancy Stevens is the winningest coach all-time in NCAA Division I field hockey with a record of 664-181-24. Stevens has guided the Huskies to three national championships in the last five season.
Scouting the Bobcats
Quinnipiac is 1-1 on the season following a 7-0 loss to No. 13-ranked Boston College and a 2-1 victory over Vermont. The Bobcats are led in scoring by Valerie Perkins and Makayla Adams who each scored once against Vermont on August 26. Hannah Teicher was the winning goalkeeper against Vermont with a .857 save percentage against 11 shots.
Head Coach Becca Main is in her 24th season and holds a career record of 190-232. This is the Bobcats third season as a member of the Big East. Under Main, Quinnipiac has made three appearances in the NCAA Tournament (2001, 2003, 2013).
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale opens their season against Michigan State on September 3 following a season in which they finished 9-8 overall with a 2-5 mark in the Ivy League. Last season, the Bulldogs fell to the Spartans by a tally of 4-0.
The Bulldogs return two of their top three scorers from a season ago in Imogen Davies (six goals, six assists) and Bridget Condie (seven goals, four assists). Sydney Terroso returns at goalkeeper after being named First Team All-Ivy League last season. Terroso finished last season with a .784 save percentage and a 1.89 goals against average in 17 starts. Overall, Yale returns eight of 11 starters from last season.
Head Coach Pam Stuper is in her 14th season at the helm and owns a career record of 95-126. As a player, Stuper won three national championships at Old Dominion.
