
Spartans Fall to Yale in Overtime

A late penalty corner spelled defeat for MSU.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -Â Playing in their third game in four days, the Michigan State field hockey team fell to Yale University, 2-1, in overtime on Monday, September 3 at Johnson Field.
With the loss Michigan State falls to 2-3 on the season and wraps up their Connecticut road-trip with a 1-2 mark. Yale is 1-0 on the season earning victory in their season opener.
MSU out-shot the Bulldogs 14-13 overall which included an 11-2 advantage in the second half. Both teams placed nine shots on goal with the Spartans making six saves in the first half and Yale making six saves in the second.
Freshman goalkeeper Jade Arundell played well for MSUÂ in the cage making seven saves on nine attempts and raising her season save percentage to .718.
Michigan State found the first chance of the contest as freshman Isa van der Weij forced Bulldog goalkeeper Sydney Terroso to make a tough save in the fourth minute.
It was Yale's offense that found their rhythm in the first half however forcing Arundell to make five saves before taking a 1-0 lead over the Spartans in the 31st minute.
Michigan State's offense picked up the pace in the second half taking 11 shots and placing seven on goal. Back-to-back penalty corners for freshman Aisha Osinga helped set the Spartan offense up, leading to van der Weij's second goal of the season in the 41st minute. van der Weij's hard-hit shot was set-up by senior Madison O'Neill who had the hold on Osinga's second penalty corner of the half.
Pressing hard for the game-winner, senior Samantha Siegel had two chances in front of the cage in the 61st minute, but both attempts were saved by Terroso. Terroso finished the game with eight saves.
A Yale penalty corner in the 75th minute spelled defeat for the Spartans. Yale's Brooke Reese provided the game-winner after her shot bounced around the box before trickling into the goal.
