East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State softball dropped a tightly-contested battle on the road at Oakland on Wednesday, 5-2. The Grizzlies improve to 16-14, while MSU falls to 14-23 on the season.
The Golden Grizzlies put a pair of runs on the board in the first, and MSU came back with a run in the top of the second fueled by a triple by Sophie Holverstott. The home team executed a double steal to go up 3-1 in the fourth, and after MSU scored on a sac fly by Kirsten Caravaca in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run game, Oakland countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Taylor Carraway.
The Spartan offense was led by Britain Beshears, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Caravaca had an RBI single in the second after a triple by Sophie Holverstott, and then had the sixth-inning sac fly to account for her two RBI. Jacey Schuler threw her second consecutive complete game, striking out three and scattering seven hits.
Kenna Bommarito earned the win in the circle for Oakland, also allowing seven hits in a complete-game effort. Kamryn Troyer had a pair of base hits.
Michigan State returns to action with a three-game set at Rutgers, which begins Friday.
