Schuler Tosses Complete Game Victory over Mercer

Raleigh, NC – Michigan State's offense continued to fire on all cylinders, posting an 11-2 win in six innings over Mercer on Friday afternoon. The victory came on the heels of a 10-6 victory over Stetson earlier in the day.
Jacey Schuler had the six-inning complete game pitching effort for the Spartans, scattering six hits but shutting down the offense after a two-run first inning for the Bears. She tied her season best with five strikeouts and walked just one. Starter Katheryn Rearly took the loss for Mercer, going four innings and allowing seven runs (all earned)
Sydney Doloszycki had a homer and a double to lead MSU with four RBI, while both Britain Beshears and Kirsten Caravaca had a pair of hits. Payton Conroy had a double and three RBI, while Kendall Smiley contributed a two-out single that plated two. The Spartans drew seven walks, including three by Hannah Greer.
After Mercer scored in the home half of the first on a two-run homer by Grace Jones, Michigan State delivered four runs in the second and three more in the third, and added four in the top of the sixth to run rule the Bears and end the game early.
MSU completes its participation in the Marucci Classic with a single game against Stetson on Saturday (10:30 am) at NC State.

- Kendall Smiley extended her hitting streak to 11 straight games, now the team's season and active best. Zoie Bernard, who homered in the first game of the day, went hitless and had her streak end at 14 games.
HOW THINGS HAPPENED
- The Bears established a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a one-out single followed by a homer by Grace Jones.
- MSU exploded for a four-run second. Hannah Greer earned a one-out walk, and Doloszycki brought her all the way around on a double to center Beshears followed with a base hit to plate Doloszyckki, making it a 2-2 game. MSU followed with a single by Caravaca and walk to Zoie Bernard to load the bases, and Kendall Smiley brought home two more runs with a single to left center that put MSU ahead, 4-2.
- MSU loaded the bases in the top of the third, with Grillo hit by a pitch and Hannah Greer with a single through the left side. Mercer pitcher Katheryn Rearley got two outs on fly balls, but Kirsten Caravaca walked leading to a Payton Conroy double to deep center that brought around three runs to give the Spartans a 7-2 advantage.
- Kendall Smiley walked to lead off the top of the sixth. She stole second and came around to score on a base hit by Sophia Grillo, who took second on the throw home. Hannah Greer drew a walk – the second of the inning – to bring up Doloszycki, who sent a 1-0 pitch over the wall in center to inflate MSU's lead to 11-2. After issuing a walk to Beshears, the Bears went to the bullpen and brought on pitcher Cloe Press. Press gave up a single to Kirsten Caravaca, but got the next two outs to get out of the inning.
