Greer, Smiley Power 5-4 Win Over Stetson

Raleigh, NC – Michigan State held off a late surge by Stetson to post a 5-4 victory over the Hatters in the final game of the Marucci Classic on Saturday at NC State.
MSU (13-10) scored all five of its runs in the first two innings, and all came with two outs on the scoreboard. Hannah Greer had a three-run homer in the first, and Kendall Smiley delivered a single that drove in two in the second frame.

HOW THINGS HAPPENED
- The Spartans opened the game with a two-out walk issued to Hannah Hawley, followed by a bloop single that fell just inside the right-field line by Grillo. Greer delivered her first home run of the season to center field to put MSU on top 3-0.
- In the second, MSU again rallied for a pair of runs with two outs. Payton Conroy drew the two-out walk, and Bernard doubled to right to move Conroy to third. Both Conroy and Bernard came home on a single by Smiley. In the third, MSU loaded the bases but stranded all three.
- The Hatters got on the board with a one-out solo homer by Amber Chumley in the bottom of the fourth. Gabby David followed with a single, and went to third on a base hit by Madelyn Synoracki, but both were stranded with a groundout by Nadia English. They added another in the bottom of the fifth, on a pair of walks and an RBI single to right field by Chumley, with the inning ending on a play at home for the third out as Jahnnie Patterson tried to come home from second.
- Stetson came within a run at 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth. A solo homer by Logan Forman followed by a double and a sac fly gave the Hatters a pair of runs in the home half of the frame. .
