Spartans Blank Broncos In 7-0 Road Rout Sunday

MSU collects first win of spring season with shutout of in-state foe.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State men's tennis team traveled down the road to Kalamazoo to take on the Western Michigan Broncos on Sunday at the West Hills Athletic Club, and the Spartans blanked the Broncos, 7-0.
The Green & White took the early point, clinching the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, the Spartan duo of junior Taym Alazmeh and sophomore Danial Rakhmatullayev made a quick 6-2 victory over WMU's Jack Davison and Ashton Adesoro.
In the No. 3 doubles slot, junior Aristotelis Thanos and sophomore Mitchell Sheldon came out victorious over Oscar Corwin and Jonas Keck (WMU), 7-5, to secure the doubles point. Spartan sophomore Matthew Forbes and senior David Saye fought hard against Drew Evans and Tim Reidel (WMU), but ultimately fell, 0-6.
The Spartans had a standout showing in singles play, winning all six singles matches. Rakhmatullayev began the win streak with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 victory over Dmitri Moriarty (WMU). Shortly after, Thanos defeated Riedel (WMU) in a straight-set match, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 1 singles, Forbes followed the trend and defeated Adesoro 6-2, 6-3.
Continuing his momentum after coming back from the Davis Cup with Team Syria, Taym Alazmeh defeated Corwin (WMU) in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Mitchell Sheldon came out on top after a three-set match against Western Michigan's Jack Davison, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Securing point seven for the Spartans, David Saye powered through a 6-4, 7-5, straight set victory over Chen-Hui Ho (WMU) to complete the sweep.
The Green & White hits the road again next week, heading west for the Diablos Invite in Tempe, Arizona. Competition will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28.
