What you need to know about Spartan softballÂ
• Michigan State heads to Baton Rouge for a five-game slate at the Purple and Gold Classic at LSU.  The Spartans will have two games each against the No. 19/17 Tigers and Howard, and will also take on Louisiana-Lafayette.•  MSU received votes in three national polls this week with its 6-3 start.  MSU has wins over two ranked opponents: No. 13/12 Clemson on the opening weekend and No. 14/16 Virginia Tech last week in Charlotte. Â
• MSU's 6-3 mark through two weekends is the best in the four-year tenure of Sharonda McDonald-Kelley, and the best since the 2017 squad went 6-2. Â
•  MSU hit .300 in its four games at Charlotte, improving on its .247 BA on opening weekend.  Five players hit .330 or better, and the team had nine doubles, a triple, and four homers.  MSU also drew 17 walks and delivered two sac hits. Â
 •  The Spartans fielded the same defensive starting lineup for eight of nine games to start the season; the only change was behind the plate in the most recent game vs.Charlotte.Â
•  Sydney Doloszycki and freshman Zoie Bernard share the team lead in batting average (.355) and base hits (11). Bernard is the national and B1G leader in triples (3), ranks second in the league in doubles (5, 25th nationally), and fourth in stolen bases (4). Â
•  Seniors Britain Beshears and Hannah Hawley each hit a home run vs. Villanova last Saturday.  The duo is tied for fifth all-time in school history with 26 round-trippers, and holds a combined three top-ten single-season homer totals.Â
• Catcher Kirsten Caravaca broke out with a 4-for-8 performance in three games in Charlotte, with a double and three RBI.  Behind the plate, she has 32 putouts, has picked off two runners, and has played errorless ball through eight starts. Â
• Junior Payton Conroy has played all nine games at short, with just two errors against 13 putouts and a Big Ten-high 26 assists, which ranks 39th nationally.  Last weekend, Conroy went 4-for-10 with two doubles and had a pair of RBI and a stolen base.Â
• Hannah Greer is Conroy's mate in the middle infield, starting all nine games.  Greer is hitting .261 with three doubles, working four walks.  In Charlotte, she was 3-for-9 with three walks and a double, scoring a team-high five runs. Defensively, she is second to Conroy in assists (18). Â
 •  Freshman Lyndsey Hooker came on as a pinch hitter last Saturday vs. Charlotte, and went 2-for-2 with two RBI. They were her second and third career plate appearances - she walked in her MSU debut against Clemson (2/8).
