EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State field hockey battled through 60 scoreless regulation minutes Friday afternoon before falling 1-0 in sudden-victory overtime to Penn State at Ralph Young Field.

With the setback, MSU moves to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in Big Ten action, while the Nittany Lions improve to 7-4 (2-1 B1G).

Junior goalkeeper Lola Munoz de Verger delivered a standout complete-game performance in cage for the Spartans, registering five saves across 61:21 of action and turning away every Nittany Lion chance through four regulation quarters.

The opening frame was a tactical midfield battle with neither side conceding ground, as the Spartan backline limited Penn State to just one shot over the first 15 minutes.

Penn State generated heavy pressure in the second quarter, but Munoz de Verger anchored Michigan State's defense with a pair of key stops. In the 25th minute, the junior netminder turned aside an attempt on a Nittany Lion penalty corner before denying another on-target shot seconds later to keep the contest scoreless heading into halftime.

The Spartans earned their best scoring opportunity midway through the third frame. In the 38th minute, junior midfielder Lilian Knorr inserted a penalty corner, leading to a shot from Carmen Maudlin that was blocked by the Penn State defense.

Munoz de Verger remained sharp in the fourth quarter to preserve the stalemate, stopping three Nittany Lion attempts down the stretch. She made a pad save in the 51st minute and turned away bids on back-to-back penalty corner sequences in the 54th and 55th minutes to send the match into extra time.

Penn State capitalized quickly in the overtime period. Just 1:21 into the extra session, the Nittany Lions connected inside the circle for the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute to seal the decision.
