EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State field hockey put together a commanding all-around performance Sunday afternoon, wrapping up a four-game homestand with a 5-0 non-conference victory over Longwood at Ralph Young Field.
With the win, MSU improves to 5-8 overall, while the Lancers slide to 0-11 on the season.
Michigan State controlled every facet of the matchup, generating a 25-3 advantage in total shots, a 20-1 edge in shots on goal, and a 15-1 margin in penalty corners.
The Spartans' attack produced 20 shots on frame, paced by multi-goal outings from junior midfielders Mora Cavazza and Lilian Knorr, who each tallied two goals and placed all of their shots on target. Senior back Serena Mailhe added a goal and an assist while putting three of her four attempts on frame. Setting up the attack, redshirt sophomore forward Nina Angeli, junior midfielder Carmen Maudlin, and sophomore back Emmy Wellejus each recorded an assist.
Junior goalkeeper Lola Munoz de Verger earned the win in cage, turning aside the lone shot she faced across 30 scoreless minutes spanning the first and third quarters. Sophomore goalkeeper Catherine Wolf completed the combined shutout, holding the Lancers without a shot on target over 30 scoreless minutes of relief in the second and fourth frames.
Michigan State opened the scoring early in the first quarter off a set piece. In the seventh minute, Knorr inserted a penalty corner, leading to an initial drive from Mailhe that was saved before she collected her own rebound and fed Cavazza, who slotted home the opening tally.
Cavazza struck again early in the second period. Off another inserted penalty corner in the 19th minute, Maudlin gathered the ball and fed Cavazza, who buried her second goal of the afternoon to double the Spartan lead heading into the break.
The Spartans broke the contest open with two goals in the third quarter. In the 35th minute, Angeli worked into the circle and set up Mailhe, who finished for her first goal of the season to push the margin to 3-0. Knorr then found the back of the cage in the 43rd minute, capitalizing on an unassisted strike off a corner sequence to extend the lead to 4-0.
Michigan State capped the scoring in the 58th minute when Wellejus connected with Knorr, who drilled home her second goal of the day and team-leading fifth of the campaign to seal the 5-0 victory.
