NOTES TO KNOW:
• Michigan State maintained the No. 2 spot in both the USA Hockey Poll and the USCHO.com poll this week. MSU has not been ranked lower than No. 4 in either poll this season.
• MSU swept Minnesota last weekend, defeating the Golden Gophers by scores of 3-1 and 3-2. The Spartans got three-point weekends from both Maxim Strbak (1-2-3) and Tommi Mannisto (1-2-3) in addition to Trey Augustine's 1.51 GAA and .947 Sv% effort in goal.
• Michigan State is no stranger to outdoor games. The Spartans were innovators of the outdoor game, hosting the first modern regular-season outdoor hockey game in North American history dubbed "the Cold War" on October 6, 2001 at Spartan Stadium. The sellout crowd of 74,544 was the largest to watch a hockey game at that time. MSU defeated Wisconsin, 4-3, at Wrigley Field in the "Frozen Confines" series on January 4, 2025. Daniel Russell scored the overtime game-winner with 1.4 seconds remaining.
• Michigan State is 2-2-2 all-time in outdoor games, also defeating then No. 3-ranked Michigan, 3-0, at Comerica Park (home of the Detroit Tigers) at the 2013 Great Lakes Invitational.
• The Spartans are 7-3-0 against ranked opponents this season. All ranked opponents on MSU's schedule to date have been ranked in the Top 10. Penn State is the fifth Top 5 ranked series on Michigan State's schedule. Other MSU opponents, New Hampshire and Michigan Tech have made later appearances in the rankings.
• This is MSU's second series against the Nittany Lions this season, taking 5 of 6 points from Penn State in East Lansing on November 7-8. Michigan State took game one, 2-1, in overtime off a Tiernan Shoudy goal, and won game two, 5-0. Augustine had a 0.49 GAA and a .984 Sv% in those games.
• Michigan State's top line forwards Daniel Russell - Charlie Stramel - Porter Martone have generated 82 points this season on 35 goals and 47 assists, and are a combined +65 on the ice with Stramel leading with a +24 to Russell's +22 and Martone's +19.
• Stramel has set a new career-best in single season points with 30 this season, topping his 27 from his junior campaign in just 21 games (set 1/15 at Wisconsin).
• Stramel is #2 nationally in face-off wins (302), #30 in assists per game (0.71), #23 in goals per game (0.54) and #15 in points per game (1.25).
• Martone ranks #9 nationally in goals per game (0.64) and is #12 in points per game (1.27), ranking second on the team in points with 28 (14-14-28).
• Russell ranks #41 nationally in assists per game (0.67) and #44 in points per game (1.00). He's one of only seven active DI players with 100+ career points (104).
• Junior goaltender Trey Augustine is among the best in the country ranking #4 in shutouts (3), #1 in goals against average (1.73) and #2 in save percentage (.938). Augustine leads all active goaltenders in career wins (59) and has played in 14 less games than the #2 goaltender.
