Eastern Sprints Another Showcase For Improving Crews
5/4/2025 5:32:00 PM | Women's Rowing
East Lansing, Mich.-- With spring semester final exams in the rear view, Michigan State was able to put rowing in the forefront at this weekend's IRA Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The result was three eights in grand finals, and a first-ever medal at Sprints in program history. This was the third consecutive season for the Spartans in this traditional eastern event, and it was a showcase for the Green and White to exhibit the progress it has made from the first races of the season.Â
Â
The fourth varsity eight won a silver medal in a finals-only race schedule on Sunday, while the second varsity eight won the petite final after narrowly missing the grand final earlier in the day with the eighth overall fastest time in the field. Both the varsity eight and third varsity eight made it into grand finals on the day.Â
Â
The varsity eight made the grand final after a second-place finish to Rutgers in its morning heat in a time of 6:58.888. MSU's competition in the grand final was five nationally ranked crews: No. 7 Scarlet Knights, No. 8 Brown, No. 14 Harvard/Radcliffe, No. 19 Columbia-Barnard, and No. 21 Dartmouth. The race went according to ranking except for Dartmouth beating Columbia for fourth place, and MSU was six seats back on the Lions (7:06.683-7:09.54)
Â
MSU's second varsity eight took the victory in the petite final, clocked in a time of 7:16.653, open water over second-place Drexel (7:23.311). The Spartans barely missed the grand final after a third-place finish in the morning heats, finishing with the eighth overall best time after the three morning races. The petite final victory meant a seventh-place overall finish.Â
Â
The Spartan third varsity eight/novice eight took fifth place in the Grand Final, behind three nationally ranked Ivy crews and Rutgers. Brown, Columbia and Rutgers took the medalist spots, and MSU was clocked in 8:07.156, open water over Dartmouth (8:13.158.) MSU was second to the Scartet Knights by nearly 13 seconds in the morning heat but closed that margin to just over six seconds in the afternoon race.Â
Â
The earliest final of the day was the fourth varsity eight, where MSU finished a half-length behind Rutgers to earn MSU's first-ever medal at the event in three all-time appearances. The Scarlet Knights were clocked in 8:05.562, and the Spartans were four seats back at the finish (8:07.690). The two Big Ten crews were more than 22 seconds ahead of third-place Northeastern.Â
Â
MSU's varsity four was fourth in its morning heat that was won by open water by Brown. The Spartans were clocked in 8:22.150, and then turned in a 8:57.296 in the afternoon petite final to take sixth place, 12th place overall. Northeastern was the petite final winner in a time of 8:2242, beating Boston College by a bowball.Â
Michigan State will take the next two weeks to prepare for the Big Ten Championships, which will be held in Indianapolis on May 17-18.
